Posted on Thu, 5 Oct 2017
Question: I have been diagnosed by my GP as having a ruptured EPL tendon in thumb. Hand is in a spica splint and am seeing consultant next week. My forearm muscles, the ones that flex when u move fingers and thumb are twitching a lot - I think mainly the ones associated with EPL muscle. Question is - is this normal, or seen, to have twitches in muscles of ruptured tendons?

Brief Answer:
Muscle twitching is common association with tendon rupture

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic,

Muscle spasms and twitches are commonly associated with tendon rupture. Inflammation and muscle strain is the reason for the development of twitches.

Continue using the spica splint. Avoid overusing and overstraining the forearm muscles like flexing your hand, lifting weight etc.

You can use Advil for pain.

if the thumb extensors are ruptured could this affect/weaken the extensors of the other fingers, notably the index?

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Tendon rupture can affect the nearby muscles to a certain extent. This is mainly due to the effect of injury and inflammation. Most cases recover without any residual problems.
