Question: my father has got a crack from greater trochantric region to lesser trochantric region in right leg 10 days ago after facing an accident. He can not lift the right leg now. doctor prescribed traction for 4 week. Pain is not reducing. whether to go for operation or not?

A fracture from greater trochanter to lesser trochanter can heal conservatively with traction as well as surgically. At his age, since there can be possible other medical problems so surgery under anaesthesia can be complicated. To relieve the pain, he can go for a traction. If the bone shows proper alignment and healing in 2 weeks then traction should be continued till the bone heals completely.
Surgical treatment decreases the recovery time but he needs a detailed medical evaluation of his heart, lungs and diabetes. He will get a time of two weeks for detailed evaluation before a surgery.
