Posted on Mon, 16 May 2016
Question: Good evening doctor - my doctor has added vilazidone, 10 mg for 10 days and then 20mg. I have taken 10mg for 5 days in the morning, it causes a lot of sleepiness and drowsiness. Was wanting to check if I can take in the evening, will it cause any sleep problems, read on the net that it can cause nightmares, will switching it to night give me weird dreams and nightmares? Also I have taken my morning 10mg today, how should I switch from morning to evening, can I take 10mg in the night also today or don't take in the night today and skip morning dose tomorrow and take in the night tomorrow? Apart from this, I am on mirtaz 7.5 and olimelt 2.5 in the night. I am also getting slight stomach ache with vilazidone, will it settle down with time and how long will it take? I am not really feeling great with vilazidone : racing thoughts, don't feel like talking to anyone and don't have the confidence to open a conversation, should I wait for it to start working, and how long before it starts working?

Brief Answer:
Vilazodone is a quick action drug.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Welcome to Health Care Magic

Vilazodone is a relatively newer drug and is supposed to result in quick improvement as compared to SSRIs. The drug is considered as safe drug and has not serious side effects. The drug in most cases result in improvement in about a week and sustained improvement is seen in about 4 weeks. The sleeplessness and drowsiness will improve on shifting the dose to evening time. But yes the drug is thought to cause change in sleep rhythm especially in high doses and can result in nightmares. In 10-20 mg dose the drug wouldn't cause much alteration in sleep rhythm.

The stomach problems will improve with time. Vilazodone will supplement the actions of Mirtazapine.

In most cases improvement with Vilazodone is seen within first week. You can wait for a week and if not much change is seen consult your doctor.

Thanks, please excuse me for late reply as was busy with some work.

Didnt sleep for last two consecutive nights. I personally feel it's bcoz of vilazidone 10 mg that am taking in the morning. What do you think can it be attributed to? Though the net says it can cause insomnia if taken in the night. Can it also cause insomnia if taken in the morning in rare cases? Day time it makes me drowsy. Didn't take today morning as was thinking of taking it in the night. Looking at my sleep deprivation for the last two days, am in no mood to take it. What you you suggest?

Brief Answer:
For sleep you can take low dose Etizolam.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

Please read sleeplessness as sleepiness in my last answer. It was probably autocorrected by my phone. ;)

As I have mentioned the drug is known to alter sleep rhythm and taking the drug in evening can cause night mares, weird dreams especially at high dose. But if the drug is causing significant insomnia then you should totally avoid taking the drug in evening hours.

For some time if you have prescription of Etizolam then you can take 0.25-0.5 mg in evening. This would quickly relieve your anxiety and you can sleep properly then. If you take the drug in morning then the drug should not cause insomnia in evening because you are taking only 10 mg dose which is really very low dose.

Thanks, Please ask again if you have more to ask in follow up.

Wanted to know about levosulpride. At what dose it should be taken for anxiety? Is it better to take mouth dissolving or the normal one and do they have the same effect? Can it cause sore throat and cold symptoms?does it cause weight gain and to what extent? Read on the net that it can cause sleep disturbance, is it better to take in the morning or evening? Does it interfere with libido and erectile dysfunction, as the net says, is it true?

Brief Answer:
Levosulpiride is a safe drug.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for asking a follow up

Levosulpiride works best in low doses for anxiety. At doses of about 100 mg the drug yields best results. The drug in low doses helps to lift the mood and this is the reason the drug helps in anxiety.

The efficacy of normal and mouth dissolving one remain same. The mouth dissolving one passes first pass metabolism and thus has quick actions as compared to normal one. I prefer to use normal one.

No in normal prescribed doses the drug doesn't cause throat or cold symptoms.

Yes the drug is known to cause weight gain. The weight gain is significant at high doses. Even in low doses the drug might cause some increase in weight.

The drug should be taken in morning hours after breakfast. But the drug in normal doses doesn't cause much sleep problems. I have not seen any patient complaining of sleep problems due to that drug.

Yes the drug in high doses increases prolactin and thus can increase risk of erectile dysfunction and reduction of libido. At about 100 mg dose the drug is safe so no need to worry.

Thanks, Still have doubts please ask again.
