Posted on Mon, 14 Aug 2023
Question: Does oxycodone interact with insulin (Humulin R) to cause large readings in blood sugar levels? Been on oxycodone 30 mg six a day for a month, change from hydrocodone 10 mg 5 a day. Blood sugar levels are now 380, normal is 180+. Diabetic 8 years

Brief Answer:

No interaction.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Oxycodone is not supposed to affect blood sugar levels (or interact with the measurement). Acute conditions (pain, fever, etc) may raise blood sugar by increasing the patient's insulin requirements.

10-15% more insulin is usually required by such patients although there is no strict rule for that. If your physical activity, carbohydrate, and caloric consumption have been stable then perhaps an acute condition (or inadequate pain control) can be blamed.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
