Question: URGENT - Hello Doctor,
My daughter (4.8 years) has fever and cough for past 2 weeks. Fever comes down only with Meftal P syrup. Our doctor has suggested antibiotic - Moxclav DS 457 mg/5ml which we started today morning. However, the fever has come back and it's 102.5 F now. Can we give Meftal alongwith the above antibiotic? Please advise soon (our doctor is not reachable).

Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Can be given along with the antibiotic.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Antibiotics would not help and irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days.
Children often suffer from viral infections that may manifest with fever. If your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. If not, it would be a good idea to visit a doctor and to get the child evaluated.

If your child has fever with temperature more than 100°F, you need to give paracetamol or acetaminophen (P-250, Crocin or Tylenol) to it bring down. If paracetamol is not effective in bringing down the temperature, you need to use Meftal-P (mefenamic acid) [prescription medicine] which is more effective. You may continue to give it.

Meftal P can be given alongiside the antibiotic and you need not worry about the same.

Regards
