Can MS Be Detected Through Contrast CT Scan?

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Aug 2015
Question: My 25 year old daughter went to the ER 2 days ago with symptoms of tingling and weakness in upper extremities and 1 dilated eye. A contrast CT scan was negative. Her symptoms did go away. She is seeing an eye specialist tomorrow. She does have an Uncle and cousin with MS. She also has psoriasis. What kind of tests would she need to take to rule out MS? Can an eye Dr. see anything that might lead them to suspect MS?

Brief Answer:
Possible MS? Need an MRI/fMRI for diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,

I understand your concern.

The symptoms shown by your daughter are highly suspicious of MS.

An MRI (fast spin echo) of the brain and spinal cord (both regions)followed by Functional MRI,if necessary is the imaging modality of choice to diagnose MS.

Contrast CT is alone not enough.

A consultation with Ophthalmologist is often necessary and will certainly yield clues to the diagnosis of possible MS.

Definitive management can be obtained only after consultation with an expert neurologist.

Thank you.
