Can Lactihep Syrup Be Given For Constipation?

default
Posted on Mon, 25 Jan 2016
Question: Hi Sir,

My father is a diabetic and 2 days back underwent angioplasty operation.
For past 2 days he has been suffering with hard stool issues.
Lactihep syrup (sugar free) has been prescribed but after checking with many medical stores, got to know that there is no separate sugar free Lactihep syrup.
So is it advisable to have the normal Lactihep syrup in current condition?
Would it by any chance increase sugar level in his body??

Thanks and Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
It won't worsen sugar control in diabetic.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr. XXXXXXX

Thanks for your question.
Noted your concern.

Syrup Lactihep contains Lactitol one form of sugar alcohol.
It has low calorie content than normal sugar (Sucrose).
It act as osmotic laxative ie. it increases osmolality of intestinal content which draws extra fluid in the lumen of intestine which help in constipation.

As it contains far less calories and it usually rarely get absorbed in blood, it won't affect sugar levels even in diabetic patients.

Hope this helps you.
