Can GERD And Food Intake Cause Nausea?

default
Posted on Tue, 26 Mar 2019
Question: 63 yr old, white male, 5' 10" 210lbs. Normally active, lift wts., workout - run/walk, cross country ski machine, rowing machine. Three days ago woke up from afternoon nap in recliner nauseous and very lightheaded. No vomiting/diarrhea, but felt like it. Symptoms gradually decreased that evening but have persisted to varying degrees since then. Prolonged movement seems to make them diminish while sitting/inactivity makes it worse.

Brief Answer:

Work up required

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Based on your description, the sudden onset of nausea can be likely related to food intake and subsequent GERD (Gastresophageal Reflux Disease).

However, the lightheadedness must be investigated further as reflux is unlikely to cause lightheadedness or dizziness. An EKG should be done as a baseline to look for a possible cardiac cause.

A complete neurological exam should be required to look for any focal deficit.

If both are normal then symptomatic treatment with PPIs like lansoprazole, prokinetics like itopride and prochlorperazine or betahistine for motion sickness should be advised for a week to see for improvement.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
