Can Duphaston And Fertigyn Be Discontinued Without Doctor's Consent?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Nov 2016
Question: Hi,

My wife is 6week pregnant. It is her 2nd pregnancy. Doctor has suggested to take Duphastone tablets two per day and Fertlogyn injection one per week until 12 weeks. This is because during the 1st pregnancy she had little bleeding during 1st trimester and took HCG injections and tablets. It was a normal delivery and we were blessed with a baby girl.

So my wife's question is as there is no bleeding seen this time can she stop Duphastone tablets and just take fertlogyn injection alone one per week until 12 weeks? Taking Duphastone tablets has some side effects of little stomach pain and discomfort and dizziness. Will there be any side effects if she stops taking Duphastone tablets? She took these tablets for about a week till now.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Continue the medicine.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
1. Duphaston tablets 10mg contain dydrogesterone, a synthetic progesterone,, this is a hormone which supports the growing pregnancy, and is safe for the baby.
2. Fertigyn injections contain HCG - again a hormone which is critical for the development of the baby inside the uterus.
Both the medicines are quite safe for a pregnant lady and are only given to promote the well being of the child.
SO please dont worry.
Fertigyn injections can be taken until the 12th - 14th week of pregnancy.
Stomach pain and other side effect may be due to gastritis ,so take antacid tab or syp to over come of these side effects.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Thank you Doctor for the quick response. I have one more question. What if she stop Duphastone tablets now, will it effect the baby?

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Can cause mild bleeding.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If you stop taking Duphaston then it can cause a mild spotting or bleeding. It will help the proper attachment of placenta to the uterus and thus the blood supply to the baby. Even if you want to deliberately stop it then do get her blood progesterone levels evaluated and taper off the doses gradually after consulting her gynecologist.
Hope my answer is helpful.
Do accept my answer in case there are no further queries.
