Can Diclofenac Solaraze Be Taken For Actinic Keratoses?
Question: I have pre-pre cancerous little bumps on my head and went to a new Dermatoligist who gave (sold) me a medication Tretinoin .025 strength for the condition. When checking out this med cream I found it was for acne and other skin blemishes. Was it proper for him to sell me this? He did Prescribe A Solareze med (40g} for me originally but the cost for this (large) amount was over $900.00 so I did not buy it. Could he have given me an Rx for a much smaller amount maybe 5-10 grams which would have been affordable by me. When I called his office To infom that I could not buy such an expensive Rx a woman in his office told me I could buy a smaller amt of the med from his office and upon questioning she did refer to the product as Solarze - 20 grams for $50. It turns out I got 10 g of Tretinoin &B 10 g of a moisturizer. I was thinking of confronting him about this because I do not want to play too long with the skin condition of my scalp. And I was planning to go back to a Dermatoligist I used befor my Insurance changed and gave me a new Dr's List. I would even pay the old Dr cash outside of Insurance. Hi,
I presume you are talking about Actinic keratoses (AK) which is precancerous condition. First let me assure you that it is not definitely proven that this would surely turn to skin cancer. Even if left untreated the chances is less than 1% to turn to cancer after 4 years.
Having all said, yes tretinoin is not standard care of treatment for actinic keratosis which is mainly caused by skin burn. There would be blemishes and scars which may look ugly. For that 5-FU or Diclofenac Sodium is given in topical form as your doctor gave the second time. Yes Solaraze is good and recommended form of treatment. Solaraze should not cost more besides there are generic forms of Diclofenac available cheaper. Your pharmacist can give you alternate options. I do not have idea about the cost difference for smaller quantitity.
Faith and trust are very important betweeen doctor and patient. If you feel that the new Dermatologist is not trustable his regimen may not work all the time. Then you should go back to your old dermat and pay him by cash.
