Can Clindamycin Be Taken While Suffering From Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis?

default
Posted on Thu, 4 May 2017
Question: Need to consult with a gastroenterologist. I contracted a bacterial infection on my eyelid yesterday at a mud run. I went to an Urgent Care doctor today and she prescribed Clindamycin HCL 300 MG 4 X/Day. I have Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and am concerned that this medication is harmful to my condition and want to confirm and if so find an alternative.

Oral clindamycin can be taken safely.Just take a probiotics daily.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.
Have gone through your details and I appreciate your concern.

As per your query i would like to say that standard text and trails says that- "Hepatotoxicity has been noted by several investigators during parenteral ( intra venous)use of clindamycin, and some have reported that drug half-life is prolonged in the presence of liver disease. However oral therapy has minimal side effects on Liver."

Mostly likely side effects of Clindamyvcin oral on gastrointestinal tract is that like other antibiotics it destroys the gut flora.

Just take a good quality probiotic like Econorm twice daily along with B complex substitute.

As such standard text mentions no direct interaction of oral therapy with liver so i would suggest you to start your treatment.

However as per your query alternative can be broad spectrum cephalosporin like cefixime. It can be used though a change is not required at all.

Hope i answered your query well.
