Can Ciprofloxacin Cause Anxiety And Insomnia?

default
Posted on Tue, 26 Sep 2017
Question: I feel better in some ways now more than 10 days after taking my last cipro pill but now for what ever reason i am having a bit of anxiety.I got up Friday morning and felt jittery but i felt better by the afternoon and into the evening. But then i noticed very late at night that anxiety was creeping in and that I couldnt fall asleep.I had drunk 2 bottle of caffeinated tea that day(24 grams of caffeine per bottle so that may have hurt me some but shouldnt the caffeine have been gone after 8 hours and why would it affect me so late at night).I was up most of the night and even tylenol pm didnt really help.I think i slept maybe an hour and a half last night.Even as i have gotten better i still worried a lot about cipro coming back to get me with delayed effects and i think my nerves are a little shot.Even when i am asleep if i feel a small cramp in my leg or a twich in my foot (which i have had a lot of before cipro) I think thats its cipro getting me and i wake up very anxious.I think i have overloaded my body over the last couple of weeks with cortisol .I am trying to follow the techniques in a book about calming anxiety that helped me once before when i thought myself into a very anxious state. But this is just anxiety isnt it and not "cipro "induced?I mean in some ways i am having less aches and pains in my legs and such than before cipro and i move around better with less pain. Before cipro i could hardly turn my head to the right without pain and now i can.I hope this is all just anxiety from worrying about delayed side affects.Any ideas about how to sleep better .I had been sleeping ok till Friday night.I had no caffeine saturday and i am made it a point to stay awake during the day. I took some tylenol pm at 11 pm saturday night and i slept from 11 pm till almost 5 pm.I then took some lorazepam to go back to sleep for several more hours(iI hope i am not taking too much medication).I had no caffiene and few carohydrates sunday and i felt fine most of the day but when it got late i could not sleep again and i was up most of the night.Anxiety really hit me this morning(I am worried this is "cipro induced " anxiety that wont go away). But i did sleep well the night before even if it was with the help of tylenol pm and lorazepam. So is this just anxiety or cipro causing me anxiety and insomnia?

Brief Answer:
Ciprofloxacin and anxiety

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome

I appreciate your concern

I read your question carefully. Ciprofloxacin is a quinolone antibiotic. You seem to be having considetable anxiety related to its use.

Its generally a safe drug and doesn't cause any serious side effects. It does have certain psychiatric effects and should preferably be taken in the morning and well before sleeping time.

As the ciprofloxacin course is complete, so most likely the adverse effects will also subside. There are no long term psychiatric effects associated with it.

Alprazolam can be advised for a week to help calm you down and have adequate sleep at night.

So this is basically anxiety that i have built up over my fear of the cipro and not the cipro itself? The strangest part is that my muscles are for the most part are more relaxed than before i used the cipro .But when i couldnt get to sleep last night (after thinking i was getting over this insomnia) i got very anxious and it started creeping back into my mind that what if its the cipro causing the anxiety.Another strange thing was that I was so anxious trying to force myself to get so sleep and it wasnt working.I felt much less anxious just getting up and staying up.I am hoping tonight that if i stay awake and dont go to sleep too early that I will more naturally fall asleep tonigh.Does that make sence?I think i can start to heal this anxiety if i can get it out of my head once and for all that its not the cipro causing it.I was just so caught off guard last night by not being able to sleep(after sleeping rather well the night before abet with the aid of tylenol pm and .05 grams of lorazepam) that I think i panicked and made myself very anxious. As of right now I dont feel very much anxiety and my pulse that i just took a short time ago was very good at 125 over 81 with a pulse rate of 65. So should i just expect some good nights of sleep and some not so good for the nest few weeks?if thats the case I wont worry as much about not sleeping so good some nights.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

The muscle tightness feeling is also associated with the anxiety. Ciprofloxacin mechanism of action doesn't lead to any spasm or tightness which you described.

I would suggest you continue the lorazepam. The dose you mentioned is very small. I would suggest a starting dose of 1 mg , if you are able to tolerate it. For optimum effect it shouldn't be stopped in between. It should be continued for at least 1 to 2 weeks. It can then be tapered and stopped ultimately. This is just to restore the normal sleep cycle which you can then adapt gradually on your own without needing lorazepam.

If you still end up having these symptoms despite the above then a psychiatric evaluation would be advised to look for any additional cause for your apprehensions.
