Can Carbamazepine And Ibuprofen Be Taken Together?
Question: When a female patient is in carbamazepine treatment, not more than 200mg per day, can she take ibuprofen at the same time?
Brief Answer:
Yes
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
A female patient who is on Carbamazepine can take Ibuprofen but they have to monitor the carbamazepine levels as ibuprofen will increase the level or effect of carbamazepine by affecting hepatic/intestinal enzyme CYP3A4 metabolism.
That means the carbamazepine dose has to be lowered to get the desired benefit of it. Similarly more dose Ibuprofen has to be taken than regular dose to get the desired benefit from Ibuprofen.
Let me know if you have any other question.

Thank you for your response, I have a few questions about carbamazepine, the patient has taken no more than 100 mg per day, today she took more than that, 150 mg, now she appears knocked out, like she's sleepy, more than normal, I took her pressure, 63/100, should I worry here? Any precautions I need to take?
Brief Answer:
Wait and watch
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
150mg per day is very low dose to cause any effects. I see people taking 1000mg/day comfortably. Still 800mg per day is an average dose.
I think you should not be worried about it. The BP should be low during the sleepy period. Her BP will recover. Just keep monitoring her BP, pulse.
I suggest a wait and watch method here.
If you have further query you can always get back to us.
Best regards.
