Question: My wife is a type 2 diabetic with neuropathy pain in legs and feet. Aleve gives her relief from the pain, but we are concerned about the side effects. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
you're right to be concerned...

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

aleve is indeed a dangerous drug particularly for a patient with diabetes. Aleve may impair renal function and cause chronic kidney disease (CKD). Diabetes also causes CKD. Patients with diabetes using drugs like aleve are much more prone to CKD than individuals without diabetes.

Other drugs can be tried for the symptoms of neuropathy like gabapentin or pregabalin. You can discuss these alternatives with the treating doctor. These drugs also have side effects, perhaps even more frequent but most of them are not as serious as CKD usually.

I hope you find my comments helpful!

Kind Regards!
