Question: 7 years ago I was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer and underwent surgical removal. I have remained cancer free however I developed ED
I have never regained function again. I am 69. I have never taken any medications; BP 125/78, not diabetic and never had erection problems. Outside of a prosthesis which I abhor the thought of undergoing such a surgical procedure; are there any solutions available to reverse the surgical damage. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Erectile dysfunction following radical prostatectomy

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Erectile dysfunction following prostate removal is due to nerve damage. There is no treatment available to reverse the nerve damage. The neurons have to recover by itself, the possibility of which reduces as time advances. However, the erectile dysfunction can be treated with sildenafil (Viagra). Since you do not take any medications or have any cardiac conditions it is safe to take Sildenafil.

Sildenafil can be started at 25 mg taken an hour before intercourse. If 25 mg is not effective, dosage can be increased to 50 mg. Maximum dosage per day should not exceed 100 mg.

Hope this answers your question. Please let me know if you need further clarification.

Dr. Lekshmi
