Are Mood Swings, Loss Of Temper And Depression Signs Of BPD?

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Mar 2016
Question: I am wondering who I should consult to help me control my moods, temper, and help me regain some interest in my retired life. I probably feel inadequate for many years now and my spouse is about ready to give up on our couple. I retired from 47 years of full time work in 2013 and I have a terrible time to adjust to my new life as a jobless person. I became a consultant last year and work 3 days per weeks which give me sense of worth. The other 4 days of the week are really painful even if I continue reading articles related to my job. I have been a geologist at Exxon Research Co. for 33 years.
My spouse is complaint about my lost of temper, opening my mouth with abrasive comments about different people and her also. My wife lately called it Borderline Personality disorder. I could call it depression, frustration, lack of goals or interest in anything except in professional activities where I probably buried myself all this active years.

Brief Answer:
Best is to consult a psychotherapist

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient,

i am a general practitioner and psychotherapist from berlin, germany.

First of all i do not think it is necessarily borderline or any personality disorder, but may it may be some sort of depression with some personality accentuation that makes it difficult for you to feel worth anything unless it comes from being active with professional activities.

This will not be anything that can be fixed from one day to another, but step by step a psychotherapist/ psychologist may talk to you repeatedly like once week to help you sort out your behavior, thoughts and feelings. This way you can learn to develop other strategies to get emotional fulfillment in your retired life rather than loosing your temper on people or feeling worthless.

In your case i would recommend for ex. a cognitive behavioral therapy, i am sure you will find that in your area. You seem to have enough self reflective capabilities to be successful with that.

Wishing you all the best,
