Are Are Abnormally High WBC And Absolute Neutrophil Counts Signs Of Leukemia During Early Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Fri, 18 Nov 2022
Question: I am 8 weeks pregnant and taking 10 mg of prednisone daily since mid May. I had a cbc done on Friday by my ob. she didnt mention anything being abnormal or unusual with my results but when I reviewed them, I thought my wbc and absolute neutrophils were alarmingly high. wbc was 17.5 and neutrophils were almost 13,000. I am attaching screenshots of the lab reports. my wbc back in March pre pregnancy and pre prednisone was 8.6. are these levels indicative of 1st trimester pregnancy and prednisone or should I be concerned something more serious is going on (leukemia etc)?

Brief Answer:
Not related to leukemia.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

You have raised WBC and neutrophil counts and rest of the findings are all normal. The rise in theses numbers is mild and can be related to an infection or inflammation. This is not suggestive of leukemia. You can consult your physician and ask to reduce the doses of prednisolone if possible in view of pregnancy. In case the counts remains high after 4 weeks then few more detailed investigations will help in ruling out the infection.

I hope this answers your query. In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out. Wishing you good health.
