Question: Hello Dr.
For many years I have taken Lisinopril 40 mg; Triaterene-HCTZ 37.5-25 mg and Metoprolol succ er 100 mg. I am overweight some 35 pounds. My blood pressure is ~ 140/85.
I have started a daily exercise and diet routine and have lost 10 pounds so far. Are the meds mentioned above a life sentence? I do not want to have to continue to have dependency upon them. Your opinion- thank you XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
B.P medication need to be continued

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

The medication you have listed i.e Lisinopril, Triamterene-HCTZ and Metoprolol are mainly antihypertensive drugs. Once started their dose can be altered based upon the response but I am sorry to say that B.P medication have to be taken life long. Diet and exercise have a positive effect especially w.r.t weight loss which can lessen the need for a higher dose of the same medicine. If the B.P medication are discontinued then the high B.P can lead to increase work load on the heart and lead to hypertrophy of the heart , ultimately causing heart failure. So, its important not to consider it a dependence rather an outlet from heart failure.

Wishing you best of health
