Question: I was prescribed Fluoxetine for OCD ailment. Pharmacy doesn't have Fluoxetine. They have Prodep. Are both medicines used for same problem? Can you please give me 2-3 options of medicines if I don't get these medicines. Also, give me the capacity, 20 mg or more, and the schedule.

Am I suppose to take it everyday? If Yes, for how long?

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Prodep is brand of fluoxetine and there is no difference between two of them. The examples of other brands include Fludac, Flunil, Flujoy from different pharmaceutical manufacturers.

The usual effective dose of fluoxetine for OCD is 20 to 60 mg per day. In young adults it is started with 20 mg per day followed by 40 mg per after a period of one week. Depending on the response the dose can be either continued or can be increased.

The usual response time in OCD is 8-12 weeks and the most individuals need the treatment for duration of either two years or longer. The medicine should be taken either daily or as advised by prescribing doctor.

I hope this helps you. Feel free to write back to me if you have more questions.
Thanks.
Regards

Hi,

While taking my son to school, I again had this OCD panic attack. A couple of days ago, there was a cat near our lift and while taking my son to the school, I passed through that area. Even though there were only workers cleaning the floor, I thought that the broom is a cat.

Also, outside my house's door, is a shoe shelf where we keep our shoes. While putting shoes on my son, I thought that there is a dog or a cat underneath it. I had to take my son in my arms and shift the shoe shelf to check if there is any animal or not. If course, there was none.

I'm writing everything in detail so that you understand the trauma that I go every day. Apart from the medicine prescribed by you, is there any behavior therapy involved?

Please let me know.

Brief Answer:
CBT along with medications yields better results

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

For the better results it is always advisable to add CBT (cognitive behavior therapy) along with medications. The therapy is often done by psychologists as their work primarily evolves around psychotherapies including CBT.

I also like to clarify that prescription is very different thing than the advice. I have the liberty of advising you as a mental health professional but have no permission to prescribe without physically examine you. My communication with you is advice only and it is liberty of treating doctor to take this advice in consideration or otherwise.

This is important because the fluoxetine which was advised by me and other psychiatrist is available on prescription only.

I hope this helps you. Feel free to write back to me if you have more questions.
Thanks.
Regards
