Am I Experiencing Motor Neurone Disease?

default
Posted on Fri, 2 Dec 2022
Question: Six weeks ago i started to get muscle twitches all over my body and tingling sensations in my skin. This is still happening.

I visited my GP 4 weeks ago who immediately prescribed Anti-Depressants. I have suffered from Health Anxiety for the last 7yrs, its come in waves. The gp did not even check me over and told me not to worry as he had no concerns.

I am worrying about Motor Neurone Disease, however deep down this is unlikely because someone with this illness could not go to the gym (run and push weights). I would like an opinion from an expert.

Brief Answer:
I personally think it is not MND. Observation is necessary.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Just twitching and tingling doesn't mean necessarily that you are suffering from motor neuron disease.

Benign fasciculations syndrome for example may cause such symptoms.

Other symptoms such speech and swallowing issues, muscle weakness, aches, cramps, etc. are present in MND.

However, it is too early to be sure about diagnosis, observation over the time is necessary.

Tests such nerves conduction study, EMG and evoked potentials may help in understanding better your condition.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

Thanks.

I do feel my left forearm feels fatigued, however the strength is still there and there’s no visible atrophy. I presume with MND the weakness would be very obvious and effect everyday life?

Is there simple tests I can do at home to put my mind at ease .....

Brief Answer:
There are no home tests.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

Weakness and fatigue are among common symptoms of the MND.

Unfortunately there is no home test to evaluate these conditions, neurological examination, tests mentioned before and observation over the time is necessary for a correct diagnosis.

Hope I helped you.

Greetings.
