I am a 42 year-old male with Type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea. Monday I have my first appointment with a gastrolenterologist for a recent sudden episode of acute diarrhea, lasting two weeks. All of the stool tests have come back negative. My concern now is that I have not had a bowel movement of any kind since Monday and am beginning to get concerned. Tonight (Friday), I gave myself a saline enema, but the following movement was incredibly hard and also small, both in stool size and total stool volume. Also, following the enema i had a sensation of incomplete evacuation. Since it is now Friday evening, I cannot talk with my doctor until Monday. My question is, how serious is this lack of a bowel movement? Is it something I should go to the emergency room for? Is it safe to simply wait and talk to the Gastroenerologist on Monday about all of my issues, including this constipation? What sorts of things should I be doing immediately and/or over the next two days?

doctor1 MD

Hello.

Thanks for posting your query.

It is not uncommon to be constipated for few days (2-3 days) after an episode of severe diarrhea.

This may occur as
1. Colon has no adequate residue to stimulate defecatory movement.
2. Inflammation has resulted in reduced colonic movement / dilation of...

My father is 67 and has undergone angioplasty six months back. He is since suffering from constipation, on and off. He takes enema which is very useful. The doctor has prescribed Duphalac. Is there another good way to get rid of constipation? Any help..

doctor1 MD

Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in.
Constipation is a known accompaniment of heart disease. It is detrimental to the heart as straining at stools puts extra strain on the heart. Daily enemas are not good as with time the bowel will refuse to move without an enema. Duphalac or lactulose is...

Hi,

For relief from constipation, you need to take high fiber diet, drink lot of fluids and take fiber supplements.

If there is no response, you may have to undergo a few tests like colonic transit study to know what type of constipation you have to decide about further treatment.

Let me know...

Hello and thanks for the query.
Laxative use can help alleviate constipation temporarily but it can be harsh on your system and can cause dependency if you use them too often.  Many constipation sufferers have found great success with Oxy-Powder®.

I have been taking codiene phosphate after breaking my humerus ( and having it plated) months ago. Now some colour and mucous is showing up in my bowel motions (they are regular) I am 82 years old. Do you think the codiene could be the cause of the mucous (my age). and should I stop taking it? Would a tabletted colon cleanser be a help? Thanking you, MG

doctor1 MD

Dear Maam,

Codiene can lead to constipation, which indirectly can lead to the altered colour and mucous in your bowel. My sincere advise to you would be to discontinue codiene as soon as possible as it can also lead to addiction and dependency. Hopefully your complaints will subside after...

Hello, in 2004-2005 I took the acne medication, accutane. A biopsy was done and my surgeon said my colon was dead. A week ?ater my colon was removed and I was diagnosed with colonic dysmotility.
