Questions and answers on "Cognitive therapy"

I am a Grad school student in Psychology. In April-August I was hospitalized for a rare infection and had 4 surgeries. I was in Hospital 6 weeks and Nursing home 12 weeks. I was accepted into grad school before being admitted fro the infection. I was given very heavy doses of Opiates for the 125 days. I successfully completed my undergrad in the nursing home and was released a week before Grad school began. I am not preforming well and can tell I don't think as well or remember as well as I did 6 months ago. My Professors have suggested I take a medical leave of absence from the program. I am on a regimen of SSRI's, exercise, non-dysfunctional environment, and am in school. My Psy Professors whom I've had before are wanting me to get cognitive therapy along with the neurogenesis regimen I am on. I feel like i'm getting better every week but the dept wants me to get therapy and come back fall of 2014. I am studying at TAMCC. My resources are very limited and am living on disability, but my loans will stop by spring semester. I need someone who will work with me in Corpus XXXXXXX I have my BA in Psychology and could volunteer in the therapist office even doing menial work in exchange for cog therapy. Please some advise would be appreciated and any help you could offer in way of advice or anything, please tell me. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX YYYY@YYYY , 361.461.6926. Thank you. XXXXXXX

Hi

I had WPW and Epsteins anomoly since birth. My mother was diagnosed with parania schizofrnio and committed when I was 10 Yrs of age. I had the WPW aablated when I was 46 and put on verapamil and ativan for panic attacks. My last psychiatrist and four other doctors continurd me on Ativan. I live in Tupelo MS. There are noy very many psychiatrist and the new one I saw 3 wks. ago took me off Ativanand gave me Buspar and 1mg. of Klonopin as a bridge to my not taking anxiety medication. I can't type!!
I mentioned my mother's illness because she might have taken lithium, she died at 51 of ALS which runs in my family. With the Buspar I am anxious almost all the time. The Klonopin does help but not as much as the Ativan. If I was stable since the age of 37 when I almost died and The new M.D. has my records why would she change this. She wants me to find out what causes my anxiety but I know as does my brother who is an M.D.. I am 62 now and prefer cognitive therapy. The last time I saw my family practioner my heart rate was 101. I take my verapamil but have been told it is not a good drug for high heart rates. I am afraid if this continues my heart will find another circuit. Having had 4 heart Caths I can't imagine another one or another ablation. What do I do.

doctor1 MD

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

I can understand your distress due to the recent worsening of your symptoms. Since you were previously on a high dose of Ativan, it is likely that the recent worsening of anxiety symptoms is due to the withdrawal effects of Ativan....

I am a retired veteran suffering from PTSD. I have been in therapy for 2 years now, slowly but surely, my outlook on life is improving. I am taking prozac and bupropion, for my depression, as prescribed by my Mental Heath Dr. Both My Mental heath provider and my PCM take the time to listen and help with any problems that have occured, they are in the same clinic and talk to each other about my care. During my cognitive therapy, I was having problems sleeping, mainly because of nightmares. I am unable to take sleep aids because, they make me to drowsy to get to work the next day. So i can only take them on weekends. because of this, I found myself binge eating. I was also drinking around a Gallon of soda a day, had to stay awake at work. this has resulted in me becoming Type II Diabetic. I also have been recently diagnosed with mild sleep apnea. from research I have seen many studies on how PTSD is a Major factor in both of these problems. My problem is my Medical team is not will ing to put it in writing that the 2 conditions could have been caused ( not the right word I know). by the PTSD. How do I find someone that I can get a second opinion from, that would be willing to put it in writing.
