What is Rupture of membranes?

Rupture of the membranes (ROM) also known as "breaking the water'' is a term used during pregnancy to describe a rupture of the amniotic sac. Normally, it occurs spontaneously at full term pregnancy & usually signals the beginning of labor. Depending upon time of ROM it is defined as spontaneous, premature, artificial etc.
