Questions and answers on "Ureteric stent"

Have ovarian cancer. Post surgery (hysterectomy) caused abscess in kidney. Antibiotics treatment currently to treat the abscess in the kidney. Latest CT scan said - "increased prominence of pelvicalyceal system, despite presence of DJ stent". This is worrying me sick. Dr is away. Can somebody please help me. How severe is that? Am due for chemo in 2 weeks. Many sincere thanks.

doctor1 MD

Hello,

If the DJ stent is in proper position and urine is draining normally through the ureter, then you need not worry about increased prominence of pelvicalcyceal system. You can talk the doctor (radiologist) who reported CT scan, if he/she is sure about urine draining properly; if urine...

I have just had a ct scan - dilation of pelvcalyceal system and ureter. Can you please explain possible cause of this. I have had pain in my abdomen - this pain comes and goes and is intense.

doctor1 MD

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Dilatation of pelvcalyceal system and ureter means that the path for the urine from kidney to urinary bladder is for some reason blocked so the urine cannot flow freely. Such CT image is very characteristic for urinary tract stones. And this also explains your...

my son is having a uteroscopy for a mass in the ureter. Kidney stones have been ruled out ( he did have blood in the urine and pain in his Right side). can a doctor know if it is cancer or does he have to wait for the biopsy? The doctor mentioned Transitional cell cancer. My son is 32 and 6'2''

doctor1 MD

Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
If he has mass in ureter with bleeding and no any stones then there is high chance of transitional cell carcinoma. However confirmed diagnosis can be given only after biopsy and histopathological examination. So go for...

I had a kidney stone removed on Friday and now have a double J stent placed inside me until Wednesday, 8/10. I am unsure if I am able to have sex and/or masturbate while the stent is inside me. Am I putting myself or the stent in any danger by engaging in these activities?

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Thanks for the query.

Your question is simple and the answer is also simple- YES.

The stent is put to prevent the complication of torsion (twisting) of the ureter due to the dilatation caused by the obstructed stone and its removal procedure and then to drain any of the stone particles which...

My daughter is 25 years old,she is 5.9 and 160ph.She had a pain in the right low abdomen and she had and CTof the abdomen. The impression is:Right kidney measures 11,1x6,1x4,9cm.Mild right pelviectasis. No calculi, mass,or perirenal fluid. No dilation of the ureter on the comparation CT or other secondary features of obstruction.Mild right renal pelviectasis. This may represent transient peristalsis or normal variation for the patient.Consider recent passage of a stone in the appropriate clinical scenario. There is no dilation of the ureter or secondary features of obstruction on the comparation CT. PLEASE,we would like to know the meaning of all of this.

doctor1 MD

Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

I would help you in interpreting the report:
The size of Kidney is fine and there is mild right pelviectasis, which indicates that there was a bit of dilation of the portion of the kidney which collects urine. This can sometimes happen if there is an...

I have had a uretheroscopy three stones removed followed by, due to intensity of pain, a cystoscopy and placement of stent. Am in excruciating pain., which lasts up to seven or eight hours at a time.I cannot find a pain killer to really help. Have had Morphine, Oxycocodone, Percacet and am suffering dreadfully. My scans show nothing remarkable which is so worrying. I am not a neurotic at all.

How long is this likely to go on? Is there a diet that might help? What pill could relieve some of this nightmare.?
PLEASE!!

doctor1 MD

Hello,

Thanks for your query.

Based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have undergone Ureterorenoscopy (URS) with removal of stones in your Kidney, following which you had developed severe pain in abdomen and DJ stent has to be placed .

Normally pain that one gets due to stone...

I have an 11-mm nonobstructive calculus in lower pole in my kidney. My Dr. is using ureteroscopy to remove it. Do you think this is the best choice. Can all of the stone be removed at this time. I have also been told that stents are very painful. Getting anxiety over this . Your info will be greatly appreciated.

doctor1 MD

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
The stone in the lower pole of your kidney can be removed by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) or retrograde intrarenaal surgery (RIRS). I personally prefer ESWL as a first line procedure and use PCNL, if it fails....
