i am 60. acquired polio in 1951. have had 18 orthopedic surgeries. diagnosed post-polio in 2000. abdominal muscles have weakened dramatically past 5yrs with lower abdomen shifting to the right. have a bulge midline. my doc says this is due to weakened muscles damaged by initial polio and exacerabeted by post-polio. other than losing weight, are there any other options?

doctor1 MD

Hi, Welcome to Healthcare Magic Forum.
I am sorry but i think you know there is no known treatment for Polio once confirmed. Supportive Measures will be of great help. Take Adequate Bed Rest, if you have pain, any analgesic like Ibuprofen 400mg would be enough. Do moderate exercises (Physical...

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Presuming that injury was on the lateral part of left ankle.
As you got 18 stitches means injury was extensive so you might have got fracture or ligament rupture along tendons or nerves underlying.
Since yellow bump may be a swelling with pus...

In reading about the recent trial of the South African Paralympic athlete, I realized that he exhibited the same emotional and irradict behaviors as my adult younger brother. The rages, threats, paranoia, crying, etc. is just like my brothers' behavior. My brother also had numerous orthopedic surgeries as a young child. Is there any correlation between mental health/emotional issues in adults who have had extensive surgeries in childhood? I know you need much more information, but generally, is there some relationship here? As a matter of information, my brother and I are estranged and I have no intention of sharing this discussion with him or anyone else. Thank you.

doctor1 MD

To answer your question, yes, there is a relation between mental and physical health. your brother needs therapeutic help immediately

doctor1 MD

Hi
The ortho doctor must have injected either lidocaine or steroid. if that were to cause a patch, it wouldn't have taken a month. This seems like a separate event . Please watch for some time ,say 2-4 weeks. if it increases, consult a dermatologist in your area

Hello,

In December my 14 yr. old son had 2 metal plates & 12 screws put in his forearm after breaking both bones. Now May and he had all of the sudden has a lot of swelling at what looks to be at the end of the plates near his elbow. No fever or any other symptoms. I plan on call his orthopedic surgeon tomorrow. Any ideas on what would cause this?

doctor1 MD

Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The sudden appearance of a lot of swelling with pain is a worrisome finding. This could be suggestive of an infection in the area. You need to get it physically examined for proper treatment.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you....

Hi there- I snapped my rib into two this past May. After looking at a recent X-ray , I was told the rib hadn t healed quite correctly. It is currently sending me into spasms and feels like it did leading up to the full break. I was referred to an orthopedic surgeon, and am seeing one next week. Do you know what that particular doctor might do?

doctor1 MD

Hello

Thanks for writing to us,

I have studied your case with diligence.
As per your history of trauma there is possibility of rib contusion.
Rib contusion is not always visible on X ray .You may need to do MRI or HRCT .

Medication like muscle relaxant and analgesic will reduce pain along with it...

Hello Doctor, My dad 58 is suffering from bone tb in cervical region (C5,C6,C7), he developed weakness in legs and coudnt walk w/o support. Initially he was treated by ortho who put him on 4 drug ATT and performed a minor operation of draining pus but his condition worsened after operation (paraplegic Complete motor and sensory loss in legs, no sense of bladder ) and was refrred to a neurosurgeon. He was operated again and decompression and bone grafting was performed, after one month also his condition did not improve and an MRI was taken again. Doctor said that there is a degeneration in the vertebrae which forms lower part of the graft and the screws were displaced from their position and were causing compression of spinal cord. He was again operated and the graft was removed(by a different doctor). Doctor said that due to multiple operations he has become weak and said that will keep him under observation for sometime and if required operation can be performed after a month. Meanwhile my dad has problem swollowing which was not there after 2 previous operations. He was put on complete bed rest by the previous 2 doctors but this doctor makes him sit for 5 min daily and has also said that will try to make him sit on wheel chair in some days. My question: Is my dad being treated the right way?
