What is Forceps in childbirth?

It is a device to facilitate the easy passage of baby through the mother's birth canal and into the world in case of maternal exhaustion, heart disease, prolonged 2nd stage of labour,etc. Nowadays rarely used only Outlet forceps are employed. The criteria for applying forceps must be fulfilled e.g. adequate pelvic space, cephalic presentation,etc, blades must be applied well to avoid vaginal tears
