Questions and answers on "Dental extraction"

I had a tooth extraction performed a week ago, it appeared to be healing as I expected. I just had a large brownish bad smelling lump pop out of it, i felt an instant relief of pressure (not that I was aware of this sensation until now) but now the extraction site is sensitive and a throbbing sensation is there. What has happened?

Dear dutchiesmum,
Welcome to health care magic forum,

With the details you have given, I can tell you that you probably had a periapical granuloma or a periapical cyst. Periapical granuloma or cyst occurs when there is long standing periapical infection. (Periapical infection is the term used to...

Hi I have been diagnoised with pericarditis. Initially I had flu like symptoms for a week the very weak for a futher few weeks with chest pains etc. Then doctor diagnoised post viral fatigue with pericarditis. I have been taking brufen and initially seemed to work but pains and weakness remain. My question however is could the pericarditis be related to dental work I received 3 months ago. I had 4 teeth extracted plus there was one tooth where a piece of tooth remains. My dentist said if it caused any problems she would remove the rest. It never has I don't have any toothace etc. many thanks Anne.

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
Not related

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Dental extraction are known to cause endocarditis, if it does occur it happens by 2 weeks following dental extraction and not after 3 months. Dental extraction has not caused your pericarditis.

I had a tooth extracted which led to dry socket. The dentist treated it w/ antibiotic and it sealed up. Quickly after I got a cold with the most rotten tasting/smelling mucus (so bad other can smell it) accompanied, by intermittent headache, slight fever, nausea (from swallowing it I anticipate) & stuffed up nose only in the nasal passage over the tooth extraction site. OTC meds only make me feel better for a little bit at a time. HELP!

doctor1 MD

hi
now when your dry socket has headed it wont create any pain in future.
the other symptoms you just told are nothing but symptoms of sore throat and cold.
it has nothing to do with the previous dental procedure.
usually these symptoms of fever and body pains will stay for 4 to 5 days and after...

I have what feels like a roll of cotton under my right cheek. This runs under my right nostril working its way back to about mid cheek. I don't notice a swelling externally but it does feel like a tightness/swelling internally. These are my symptoms currently. Now for some past history. Last February I noticed what seems to be a swelling under/behind my right cheek not severe just feels like the skin is tight. I had dental extractions done last year and there are no teeth in the area of the swelling. I went to the dentist to see if I might have an abscessed tooth. They took xrays and saw no signs of abscess. He did notice a darkness in the sinus cavity area on the back side of one tooth which is in the area of the swelling . He thought maybe it could be sinus related. I didn't seem to have any drainage discharge - no fever etc. On a follow up visit to my GP he prescribed a CT scan. The scan came back and the indication - SINUSITUS ACUTE. The tightness/swelling feeling seems to be near or in my right lower cheekbone where it meets the upper back teeth in the back. The report mentions that there is mucosal thickness in the left maxillary sinus and also a 8mm cyst. I had a course of antibiotics but it never really made a difference. So I ignored tightness. Five months ago I had dental extractions and all of my upper teeth on the right side were removed up to the 2 front teeth. I had some swelling due to the extractions - typical but now I am at the point where I began -I have what feels like a roll of cotton under my right cheek. This runs under my right nostril working its way back to about mid cheek. I don't notice a swelling externally but it does feel like a tightness/swelling internally. I went back the Oral Surgeon about 1 month after the extractions as the swelling was not getting better. He said to think of if as if I was punched in the mouth - its probably a hematoma ( I see nothing external). He said there were no infections. Well its been 5 months and this tightness/swelling feeling seems to be getting larger /tighter - more noticeable when I workout or get excited as its filling up with blood? So the question is what could this be? Scar tissue? Some sort of mass (trapped blood) ? Thanks - XXXXXXX

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
could be sinus related

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to health care magic,

I am Dr Sriram Nathan an ENT surgeon and it is my opinion from your history that you may have a sinus problem which is typical after any dental extraction involving the upper tooth.
In any case it may be...

Hi I have had a tooth extraction over a week ago. It was my lower jaw. Since then I still find it painful to open my mouth. When I do it hurts across my face down my neck and up to my ear. Do you think I still have an infection?

doctor1 MD

Hi,
Difficulty in completely opening the mouth is called trismus. this problem can occur after wisdom tooth extraction, as it is usually a surgical extraction resulting in trauma to the adjoining tissues. If you have completed the course of antibiotics and your dentist is sure that the extraction...

Hi. I ve had a tooth extraction about 4 weeks ago & I haven t had my period. I never miss my period. The only other time I missed a period was 7 years ago on the same month I had my tooth extracted. Is there a correlation between the 2? Or could there be another underlying factor? The medication I took after the extraction this time was Amoxicillin , I don t remember what I took the last time. Could it maybe be the medication?

doctor1 MD

Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.

Amoxicillin is not associated with cycle irregularity and it does NOT effect birth control or how it works. Certainly stress and significant illness can cause irregularity in terms of when you ovulate and thus irregular cycles. The most...

I am a 73 yr old man, 62 kilos with high blood pressure for these last 20 yrs but it is successfully being treated. I do sports, don t smoke and drink daily a small glass of wine. My mom died at 93 due to leucemia and father at 88 due to a massive stroke (his family was prone to strokes). I just had my yearly physical exam (ultra-sound of internal organs, blood profile, etc and all was normal. I take 100 mg of aspirin daily, Diovan 80 mg, Natrilix 1.5 mg, Norvasc 2.5 mg, Lipitor 5 mg on a daily basis. On 17 January I had a canine tooth extracted - a difficult extraction lasting one hour including opening up of the gum to see if it was possible to save the decayed tooth. Today, 30/01 the wound is almost healed and I ll see the dentist about an implant. However yesterday a.m. I think I had a transient ischemic attack experiencing great difficulty in articulating (speaking). It lasted about 30 minutes and now I feel fine. This p.m. I ll see my family doctor. Could this TIA be related to the stress of the extraction and periodontal work although the dentist monitored my blood pressure during this operation? I ve been living in Kunming, China (1800 metres altitude) for the last 21 yrs and in Cameron Highlands (Malaysia) for the last 3 months. Currently I am in Hong Kong since 9 January. Thanks, Jean-Noël Posner

My son soon to be 41yrs old had an injury at work that completely amputed his dominant right arm and externally amputed the external 98%. It was held on by a slither of skin in 2009. He has had 5 surgies. A bridge like bar inside the upper part of his arm and lower cavador nerves in the lower part. He has what they call a bear claw hand and wrist just flops so he has to wear a wrist brace but even though he has no feeling in certain parts of his hand he is in pain always especially in the cold. And where the bridge in the upper arm is you can t touch at all because it causes great pain. His WC cade was closed and now is on SSD and Medicare part A&B,but would never be able to afford any kind of medical bill balances. His medicines have cause him to have his teeth decay and he of course has no dental coverage at all. He needs a doctors that are willing to take care of his teeth with extractions and dentures but most important one that is willing to amputee his arm and give him a robotic one so he would once again have two arms and hands that work without pain any longer and then fix his teeth to aldso spot that pain and get him off his meds. But he also needs this all to be done pro bono since he would not be able to afford any cost. He is in the Bronx,NY.
