Throat culture

What is Throat culture?

Throat culture is a laboratory diagnostic test to find a bacterial or fungal infection in the throat. Sampling is performed by throat swab, and the sample is put in a special cup (culture) that allows infections to grow. If an infection grows, the culture is positive. The type of infection is found using a microscope, chemical tests, or both. If no infection grows, the culture is negative.

Hi Doctor,
I was suffering from bad throat and fever 1 month back. Took Taxim O 200 for 5 days but it came back after 2 days after leaving the medicine. Then took Augmentin 625 but same happened. Then went to ENT and he gave me Dalacin for 5 days and asked me to go for Ultrasound if it doesnt cure..It came back again after 2 days and I went for US. It showed cysts in my thyroid gland. I went to an endo doc immediately and he prescribed some medicines and asked for FNAC and TPO tests(I never did that but suffering from hypothyroid since 11 years).
Im really concerned that the pain in my throat is due to cysts? Is it cancerous? How serious the condition is?Iam attaching my US summary document here.
I had anxiety since 2010 and suffering from panic attacks can thyroid cause that?

Medicines Iam on since 5-6 years
-thyronorm 100 mcg, glycomet 1000, Duloit 30 (for anxiety)
medicines prescibed by endo
-thyrowel, pantocid L, ventoz,

my current TSH level is 0.8, HB 10. Can I take pantocid L with Duloit?

Iam really very scared..Please help..can I get cured?

Thanks XXXX

Hi, I performed a Rim Job on a woman, and two days after, I had a very bad sore throat, fever and felt achy. The urgent care doctor gave me amoxicillin, and prednisone. I was on Amoxicillin for 10 days and prednisone for 4 days. I started feeling better, but two days after the amoxicillin was finished, my sore throat returned (just sore throat, I feel good besides that.) The doctor at Urgent Care then gave me an antibiotic shot into my butt cheek (I can't remember what it was), and 10 days of Cefdinir. The sore throat went away, but then came back 2 days after finishing the Cefdinir. I then saw my actual doctor (not urgent care) and he gave me a throat culture, and also Azithromycin for 5 days (250 mg a day, first day take 2). My sore throat is still not better. I have white patches on my left tonsil. I have had a sore throat now for a little over a month, and am very worried. What could the problem be, and how can I get rid of my sore throat and resume my normal life? I took an oral Gonorrhea and Chlamydia throat culture and both were negative. Thank you.

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
I suggest to do some further tests.

Detailed Answer:

I am a 48 year old male , no history of smoking and I do not drink alcohol excessively. I have developed the following symptoms over the last few months: Severe fatigue, extreme sensitivity to cold ( walking into air conditioned super markets and department stores ), dry mouth, irregular cold sweats that come and go, and excess saliva that seems to be aspirating into my upper stomach ( or lungs ) causing me to cough to clear out my ( upper stomach or lungs ) and spit our clear sputum. My upper abdomen appears to be swollen and hard. I pound a bit on my upper abdomen right under my chest when I coup and this seems to allow me to cough a bit better and clear out excessive sputum which is in my ( upper stomach / lungs ? ). I should note that a few months ago I developed acute bronchitis and I was treated by the ER with prednosilone and antibiotics and it is gone. I have been on the internet trying to narrow down the symptoms and self diagnose and I have come up with 3 possibilities or combination of all of the above. 1-Hypothyroidism ( fatigue and sensitivity to Cold ), 2-Gerd ( aspiration of stomach fluid / acids ) in the lungs, 3-Allergies to Mold / Allergens ( aspiration of sinus fluid XXXXXXX , in the lungs / acute bronchitis symptoms ). I don't know what to think. When I went to the ER for acute bronchitis months ago, all my testing came back negative and my blood work was good and a chest X ray came back clear ( twice ). I eat right, get plenty of rest, sleep and fluids and work out a few times a week. Please help me diagnose this condition.

I thought post nasal drip was causing my sore throat. My doctor said I have a virus but didn't swab the back of my throat to check for anything else. It hurts to talk, eat anything and even swallow my saliva. I've had it for 7 days now. What else could it be? Should I go back to the doctor?

doctor1 MD

Thanks for posting your query.

The three primary causes of your symptoms (sore throat, painful throat while swallowing and talking) can be due to:

1) Viral sore throat that can be due to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), but can also be caused by other organisms such as cytomegalovirus (CMV). It...

My son has a sore throat with fever every 3weeks for the last two years all his tests come out ok he has had every test possible but the doctors have no answers secondly he gets severe night sweats each time which continue even after the fever is gone.he is 29 years old.

Has undergone several tests over the last 2 years, but nothing has been wrong. Tests include complete blood, spleen, x-rays of chest, stomach and pelvic. Also tested for malaria and TB and scores of other tests for bugs. Several other tests as well. He is now planning to have his case reviewed at Mayo Clinic.

Hi,

I have had a sore throat (swollen glands, red tonsils) and conjunctivitis for 15 days. Both the rapid strep test and the comprehensive throat test came back negative. Also I had a blood test for mono which came back negative. The blood test also checked my white platelets which were normal. What virus do you think I have and when will it go away? I am a 38 years old female, 105 pounds, with otherwise great health.

My 5 year old son had strep pharyngitis 2 weeks ago and was treated with keflex x 10days. Midway through the keflex course he c/o lower bilateral abdominal pain although he would first point to the right lower quadrant. Yesterday he developed a fever, headache, sore throat, and abdominal pain. No N&V, no diarrhea, no one else is sick in the house. He was seen by his PCP who did a throat culture, UA and culture. His UA showed +4 ketones, trace blood, +1 protein, negative glucose, and specific gravity of 1.010. We were given a second course of Keflex and sent to the ED where they did another UA, CBC, and CMP. Glucose 116. UA still had +4 ketones but no other abnormalities. Today he is febrile 101 to 102 F, with abdominal pain which is lower bilateral but a little more on the right side. The ED said that he could have an appendicitis brewing and to keep an eye on him. The also said that his urine did not look dehydrated and his electrolytes looked normal so they are not sure why his ketones are so high. Any thoughts?
