Questions and answers on "Zoloft"

My Boyfriend takes zoloft. A couple of times in the last year his prescription has run out and he has come off it.
There is a significant change in his personality and I am having trouble getting him to a new doctor to get a new prescription. Is there any alternative

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Zoloft is an antidepressant which helps control depression and anxiety. Other than that, it does not change one's personality. If you feel that your boyfriend's personality has significantly changed since he stopped Zoloft and the change is more than just an increase in anxiety and low mood,...

because of moderate depression i have been since taking zoloft 50mg for a year and a half, i am am having daily aching of my muscles, swelling at elbow, knee, wrist and ankle joints, rather than having few intermittent flare ups of fibromyalgia.
i thought zoloft was to help fibro., but now i am in constant discomfort and take tramadol for pain.
is this a side effect of zoloft or all anti depressants? if not, would it be better to get on another drug?
thank you

doctor1 MD

I heard though, that you are not supposed to take the 2 together. I take the zoloft at night and tramadol during the day. i really am concerned for my baby s health, I keep hearing different things. any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

doctor1 MD

Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.

Not only is tramadol not a typical pain medication used in pregnancy, there are animal studies that suggest that there might be some harm. Also, you are right, there are interactions between these medications. It is okay to take Zoloft...

I recently took myself off of 50 mg Zoloft, doing so gradually. I have gained 25 pounds in just a few months and am constantly tired and sluggish. I was hoping the Zoloft was the weight gain and no energy problem. I am also taking Levothyroxine, 50 mcg tablets. My doctor told me to take a whole pill one day and 1/2 pill the next day. I am gaining more weight and still have no energy. I'm 67 years old and have always been pretty active. Could the thyroid medicine be causing my lack of energy ? I was on the Zoloft for about a year and have been on the thyroid meds for 2 years or more.

doctor1 MD

Hi & Welcome.
I have gone through the history given in your query and it seems to me that the recent weight gain appears to be to due to inadequate dose of Levothyroxine.

You need to increase the dose of Levothyroxine after consulting your treating physician and check its response after 4-6 weeks...

Thank you for your help

doctor1 MD

Hello
Welcome to HCM

Zoloft is sertaline and this is a SSRI drug. It is a safe drug with very less side effects. Caffeine is also a psychoactive substance. The supplement you are taking consists of caffeine and there is no risk to take that supplement with the drug. Just keep a gap of about 2...

I was put on Zoloft 3 weeks ago for severe anxiety from a traumatic experience after surgery. I always have had anxiety though. She started my dose at 50 mg. and it has worked somewhat. She increased it to twice a day now. My question is this. Can I drink alcohol while taking this drug? The paperwork says I can. I am a social drinker. I am a 66 year old female.

doctor1 MD

Hey there,
Both Zoloft and alcohol affect similar chemicals in the brain. In normal individuals, it has not been shown to increase the mental and motor skill impairments caused by alcohol but has not been studied extensively in individuals with anxiety. Hence the use of Zoloft and alcohol...

I recently lost my carelink due to not being able to afford the monthly cost of 65.00, I had one more 3 month prescription of zoloft to fill, which I have been on for 20 yrs, but they refused to give me the medication. I had to stop taking zoloft cold turkey, and am not feeling well. Can you explain the symptoms of withdrawl, and if it is dangerous for me to be in this situation.

doctor1 MD

Hi there ~

It is unlikely that stopping the zoloft cold turkey led you to be unwell. However I believe that the withdrawal symptoms are related to excessive anxiety related to not taking the medications. I also think that you can pay for your own medications if you are no longer covered by the...

hi I have pretty bad anxiety, but have been doing well lately with the help of Zoloft and ativan. well, at the moment I'm feeling dizzyish, light feeling? also a little short of breath like I can't feel myself breathing, and just an overall weird feeling like I'm out of my element. does this sound like anxiety to you? or something else?

doctor1 MD

Hi there, thanks for asking. feeling dizzish and also a feeling that the person cannot breathe are some symptoms of anxiety as you mentioned in the question. If you have started Zoloft less than 6 weeks ago, you will find a better feeling after some weeks. However, you may need the dose of zoloft...

My heartbeat wakes me up in the mornings starting around 2am. The rate is at least 90 as it is most hours of the day. On occasion my heart rate is 70 and normal. My heart rate increases and pounds when I move in the bed or get up and walk. Happens several nights a week. Doctor put me on Zoloft because he said this was being caused by anxiety. The zoloft works fine for about 2 weeks @ 25mg but just becomes ineffective. I wore a holter monitor and took a stress test. Cardiologist says my heart rate is a little high but otherwise everything else is fine. Put me on metoprolol. Seems to work but makes me short of breath. Had to quit. Blood pressure fluctuates. Sometimes 120/70 sometime 150/90. This is very confusing. Anxiety or something else?
