Questions and answers on "Valtrex"

I am a 49 year old female, 142 lbs, in good health. I was diagnosed with genital herpes about 12 years ago. My last outbreak was 9/10 years ago. I take Valtrex, 500 mg, every day since my last outbreak. I had unprotected sex and my male partner and I are concerned if he can contract the herpes virus. I was told as long as I was on the preventative Valtrex and have no out break we are fine? Is this true? We had intercourse and oral sex. We want to know what his chances are of getting the genital herpes virus? We wanted to know if there is a test I can take to see where my levels are. Also how long would he have to wait to be tested, if needed.

Yes, I am currently taking Valtrex (for on oral herpes outbreak). I took an antacid this morning--tagamet with my valtrex dose (an hour or so ago). My family commented saying I was "acting drugged". I feel slightly sluggish, a little sedated, & just a bit foggy (not clear headed). I looked up the interactions of valtrex & cimetidine actually is one. Could my symptoms be caused by this interaction? Is this serious? How long until this begins to wear off?

doctor1 MD

hi, these are common symptoms of tagamet (cimetidine). you need not be concerned. They will fade away once you stop those drugs after the full course.
The interaction is not a serious issue as it effects the drug metabolism, but do not increase the risk of adverse effects.
Remain happy. All the...

Can I take either Zanocin or Valtrex if I m pregnant in 37 weeks? I ve got genital herpes mixed with dermatitis , and the heavy discharge in pregnancy started them. I have terrible pain on the skin around my genital area, and neither the corticoid cream nor the vaginal pills Gynophillus help me for good; in 2 days after I stop using the cream, the pain is back and I m terrified, I don t know what to do any longer. I know for sure that both Valtrex and Zanocin stop my pain, because I already used them in the past. Thank you.

doctor1 MD

Valtrex is safe in pregnancy In women with recurrent hsv, it should be started at 35 weeks of pregnancy, one pill daily, to prevent recurrence. This will prevent hsv from being present at the time of delivery and avoid a c section. Zanocin is an antibiotic and is not effective therapy for hsv.

no such effect

I thought I had a UTI, but they told me no bacteria in urine test Here are the symptoms, some may not be related. For several years now I have had a little semen discharge whenever I am constipated and have a hard bowl movement. After reading online, I assumed I had an enlarged prostate and that the discharge was from that, coupled with being obese. Over the past month or so, I noticed a bad smell to my urine that reminded of when I helped care for my grandmother when she was old. I also would feel like I had to go to the bathroom to urinate or like I was going to pee my pants after I already went. In addition, the tip of my penis was a little tender and red, and the inside of the hole was red also. I immediately thought I probably have UTI, so I went to the doctor. They did a quick test in the office to a urine sample and said, no bacteria, but they would send it out for a more complete analysis. Still no results. So I didn't have to wait, they gave me a prescription for Bactrim and told me to take it for 3 days. I did that and the symptoms never went away. Help. More info on me: I haven't had sex in 7 months. I take atenolol for high blood pressure I take omeprozole for GERD I have also been taking phentermine for 2 months to lose weight I sometimes take an OTC called melatonin to help me sleep I also take Valtrex occasionally for cold sores I also take a daily multi- vitamin

My husband has shingles and was treated with 7 days of valacyclovir...and some tramadol for pain. He has finished the valtrex, but does not take the tramadol as it was too potent for him. The intitial outbreak has crusted over and the scabbed areas have fallen off...there have been no new outbreaks. He was treated on the 4th day following the first visual of the rash. It has be 15 days since first noticiing the rash...and he has some blood in his urine once a day for 3 days....in the afternoon. Can the virus be a cause of the blood?

My husband has genital herpes and was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. He received 1 treatment of chemotherapy and has run a fever everyday for about 2 weeks. About five days after his treatment he noticed discomfort of the scrotum. It was red on both sides and had areas of what appeared to be pus filled lesions. Could this be a side effect of the chemo or is this an outbreak. He is taking valtrex and applying a cream. It seems to be improving slowly. Should he tell his oncologist about the herpes. Will it effect his treatments and does chemotherapy increase the severity of outbreaks.
