What is Valsartan?

Valsartan is a antihypertensive drug of angiotensin II receptor antagonist class. It works by blocking the action of certain natural substances that tightens blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump more efficiently.

Questions and answers on "Valsartan"

Correction long pink pill I ordered the EXACT SAME THING WHICH WAS A DISCOUNT MEDICATION AND IT IS CALLED HYDRAZIDE 25 ALSO A TABLET. QUESTION: Are both the same type of mediation???? Obviously they sure do not look alike. This one is a round white pill. It says on the container Hydrochlorothiazide tablets LP (or IP) 25.

Valsartan/HCTZ is a combination of the TWO drugs Valsartan -BP Lowering medication and HCTZ is a Diuretic whereas the HCTZ-Hydrochlorothiazide contains ONLY HCTZ not Valsartan so both drugs are NOT same

my insurance company does not want to cover the generic version of diovan/hctz 160/25mg. it is recommending i switch to hctz 25mg qd and losaartan 160 mg to be given separately! is this the same thing just different manufacturers? am i getting a lower quality and possibly less desirable choice just so they can increase their profit margins?

doctor1 MD

Hi
thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.

Diovan is Valsartan and HCTZ is Hydrochlorothiazide. Valsartan is an Angiotensin receptor blocker. Losartan also belongs to the same category. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic. A diuretic increases excretion of both water and electrolytes and results in...

My husband is taking varsatan +bisoprolol and he is worried about the connection of valsartan to diabetes and extreme pain in hands and legs. There is also leg and ankle swelling. In addition he is taking 1000 mg of potassium citrate for the control of oxcalate kidney stones.
He was told he has osteoarthritis which caused the pain and was prescribed oxyconcet.
He had a blood test that shows high level of the hormone that indicates muscle damage but heart problems have been ruled out. Increased levels of albumen were found and darker than normal urine is present.
His doctor has doubled the valsartan to 320mg this week to get blood pressure down even though it is normal (127/72) and he is also taking glumetza to control glucose level, which were reported as normal in the last blood test.
He is afraid these pills are causing muscle damage and will move him closer to type two diabetes.
Please help.

doctor1 MD

Dear,

Thanks for your health concerns.

The good news is that neither valsartan or bisoprolol have been found to have a significantly increased risk of diabetes; pain in the extremities is not a common side effect either.

Your doctor is trying to minimize progression of kidney damage with the use...

hi. previously i used amlopipine/valsartan 5mg/160 mg from EXFORCE (novartis). will there be any advantages/disadvantages or complications from changing to amlodipine 10 mg (from eurodrug) ?

49 years, male, 1.75m , 78 kg. Asian. Current blood pressure: 135 / 80

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Your previous medication contains two medications, Amlodipin 5 mg and Valsartan 160 mg, if you switch it to only Amlodipin 10 mg, it may not be enough to control your blood pressure.

Take care

I am a 71 yr. old woman and have taken Diovan for many years because of episodes of high blood pressure. But this was at least 15-10 yrs. ago and I have had no high blood pressure. I always have low blood pressure with a very low pulse (40-45) which has caused concern with another doctor of mine. I have no energy or desire to do anything. Yesterday I didn t take my pill and I felt normal. But my concern is how to get off the medication, as I know it is not good to just stop taking a medication altogether. I need to know what I should do in coming off this medication.

I had been taking Diovan for a number of years and insurance company suggested I replace Diovan with the Losartan since it was cheaper. I took 50 mg. of the Losartan yesterday morning. Noticed a tight feeling in chest yesterday afternoon. At the time I went to bed (around 12:30 a.m.) I experienced severe pain in left side of chest, radiating through back and left shoulder. Took two nitro pills and dropped off to sleep. Upon arising this a.m. I again experienced pain in the same area, got a little scared and got very hot. Tried to stay calm, ate some breakfast and felt some better. Also, severe hurting in upper right arm where large muscles join together. I had a heart attack latter part of 2005 and diagnosed several years ago with fibromyalgia. I am 77 years old, active for my age, caring for 88-year-old husband who suffered a stroke six months ago. I hesitate to go to ER this a.m. due to home situation and long wait getting medical attention.
