Synthroid

What is Synthroid?

Levothyroxine, also L-thyroxine or T4, is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine, which is normally secreted by the follicular cells of the thyroid gland. It is also used to treat thyroid hormone deficiency.

Questions and answers on "Synthroid"

My mother was on Synthroid medication for many years (dosage 125), prescribed by her family doctor, for some reason she stopped taking it for a one month. She still has it (Synthroid) at home.
Last week she got sick with very high blood pressure, UTI and ended up in the hospital for 4 days. She was released from the hospital today and was given a new prescription with levothyroxine (dosage 0.75) instead off Synthroid .
I am not sure what to do now to take levothyroxine or Synthroid till we schedule to see her family doctor in the middle of next week.
Thank you very much.

Hello, I'd be happy to help you with your question. To put it simply, levothyroxine and Synthroid are the same thing. One is a brand name and the other is generic. MDs switch it up sometimes as name brand medications are more expensive than generic.

What is important is that she continues to...

Yes, thank you. I had my thyroid removed in 1979 and have been taking synthroid ever since. Recently, my physician began experimenting with my dosage. I went from .015 to .112 to .125. Then, my insurance stopped carrying synthroid and I had to try generic. After several months of feeling really tired, starting to gain weight, and being irritable, also, having unbarable leg pains an couldn't sleep' I went back to taking the .015. I just want to know if the generic replacement is exactly like the synthroid? And, will it hurt me to take it after all these years of taking synthroid. My TSH readings have been all over the place.

doctor1 MD

I take Synthroid 0.112 mg daily. May I safely take Actialin in addition. I had my tryroid killed at age 27 with radio active iodine at the age of 28. I am now 66, and recently my Doctor lowered my Synthroid from 0.150 mg so that it would not overtax my organs?

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Yes, you can safely take it with levothyroxine. There is no reported side effects.
Dose of levothyroxine are titrated according to clinical judgement and thyroid levels.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

I was prescribed synthroid for thyroid issues, when I started the medication I noticed the next day I broke out in hives. After years of trying to get my dr to take me off of synthroid because along with the synthroid came prednisone because the hives were uncontrollable, I stopped both the prednisone and the synthroid. Against my dr wishes of course. After stopping the drugs they eventually disappeared. Now 6 years later I go back to the dr and I was told I had to take synthroid again, I figured its been years so let me just take them. I took them and agin like the last time, I broke out in hives. Is there an alternative to synthroid and Levothyroxine ?

Mother in law thinks she has or will get liver problem from generic synthroid. She has taken it for a few months & now says she has dark stool & blames the synthroid. However she just went to hospital for chest pain she thought was heart but indigestion from the chili ch. I have to agree she wants to find something wrong. But aleese hot dog & fries. She is 81. Her sons say she is hypocondriac I can see is possible difference in delivery of the thyroid med in the generic which is debatable but nothing about liver problems. She said a pharmacist told her there was problem with generic synthroid meds & liver.

doctor1 MD

Hi , I am 20 weeks pregnant, my TSH level is 4.72 My physician tried to put me on Synthroid - 25 mcg ( but I took its generic version called Levothyroxine ) but due to some kind of Tachy cardia problem before, I could not continue this medication as it effected adversely on my heart beats and my heart beats race up to 3 times the normal and it took almost a week to get stable or a little normal... also wanted to mention that I took only 1/2 a tablet of 25 mcg of this medicine, which reacted instantly, so my doc asked me to stop it and to see a Cardio, all came normal when they did ultra sound of my heart and other check ups. Now my Physician asked me to try Thyronorm which I used to take in India prior my pregnancy , but she would like to know if this is safe to take during pregnancy , also please advice how much should be the right amount of dosage in my case.

I am a 46 year old female. I have hypothyroidism. I take 0.137 mg of Synthroid. I was recently diagnosed with a low red blood cell count for which I am being tested with a blood stool sample, MRI, liver check and a possible bone marrow sample. I have missed 3 periods when except for 4 years ago when I missed 2 in a row. Prior to these 2 incidents I have never ever missed a period. 2 pregnancy tests have determined that I am not pregnant. Do you have any advice or can you help by giving me any information on what could be happening in my body. Thank you...Dianna

Prescription changed to synthroid 50 mcg. October 2010 recheck showed TSH 2.5. January 2011 felt my concentration impaired, also beginning in November 2010 started experiencing lower back pain when standing to dry hair in morning and when walking in mall, sitting down brings relief of pain. Also for over a year, my mouth/throat feels funny in lower wisdom teeth area, tongue feels swollen at times. Jan 2011 blood work shows TSH 4.2, FT4 1.2. Vitamin D insufficiency (29 ng/mL). Doctor prescribed Vitamin D 50000, take 1 per week for 8 weeks. Should I be concerned about fluctutation in TSH? Is my medication working and at right level? My calcium is 9.5. How would I know if I have hyperparathyroidism? How often should my TSH be checked?
