Questions and answers on "Propecia"

i am going through heavy hair loss in last couple of weeks. i was using minodoxil 10% from dec 2011.and i was also taking propecia 1mg daily.I am also taking swa pameetto extract as my doctor recommanded from last 1.5 year.As a result i got 70% of my hair back within six months .But i discontinued minodoxil & propecia from last 2 month and my hair loss started very much and i again lost all my hair we i gained.should i continue taking minodoxil & propecia.will i get my hair back ?

doctor1 MD

Hello,

Unfortunately the benefits of Minoxidil & Propecia on Hair Loss stop once the medications are discontinued. Since you had good results earlier its worth continuing. I hope you are aware of the potential side effects of propecia and you can discuss the same with your doctor.

Hope this...

I am a 36 year old male and weigh 210 lbs . I have been taken propecia for 3 years . In the last 10 days i have just started taken Testosterone enanthate, in which i take 500mg every 5 days. My question is, will this effect the propicia from working or will the testosterone cancell the propecia out. Also I have noticed alot more hair in my comb, I was wondering whether this would be due to the effects of the testosterone, or does hair loss usually appear over prolonged usage. The amount of propicia i take is 1mg per day .

doctor1 MD

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Propecia prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which plays a role in male pattern baldness.
DHT levels would decrease.Only about 5% of testosterone is normally converted to DHT but DHT is a very strong hormone.

DHT is the...

This is more comment than question. Yesterday I saw an article that stated that propecia can cause male infertility . Afew years ago I was diagnosed with azoospermia . My urologist could find no cause. A geneticist found nothing abnormal. I fathered a child twenty years ago. When I read about the propecia symptoms: shrunken testicals, pain in the same area, I realized these were identical to my symptoms though I had used minoxidil for years as opposed to propecia. I really think this could be what caused this as the timeline of my usage does coincide with when the symptoms began, I just never put 2 and 2 together until being diagnosed with the az and then reading the article. Any opinion?

doctor1 MD

Hello
Thanks for your query.
Yes, use of propecia is corelated with azoospermia.

Hello Doctor,

I was diagnosed with Male Balding Pattern. And my dermatologist wrote me a prescription to use propecia.
But am really scared from the side effects. Am confused because there are some people who says they didn't have sides effect and others say they had and were permanent. Is there a way i can know how will i response to the drug. Or i should stay away from it.

Thanks.

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Thank you for the query.

Propecia (1mg) contains finastride, which is a 5 alpha reductase blocker (enzyme present in hair follicles). This enzyme is responsible for conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which in turn causes thinning of hair.

When this enzyme(5 alpha...

doctor1 MD

Hello,
Thanks for your query. Based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have been taking Propecia for baldness. This drug contains ( Fenesteride) 5 alpha reductase inhibitor that prevents formation of active Testosterone and thus reduces the testosterone level in the blood....

I started taking propecia when I was 17. I had minor sexual side effects - but they slowly went away over the next 2-3 years
When I was 22 I started taking avodart instead of propecia. I had severe side effects that kept getting worse. The side effects are listed below. I am now 26. I quit the drug 1 year ago and although I am having some very slight improvments the side effects continue. I have had lots of blood tests completed and everything is "in range" according to my family doctor (same one that prescribed me propecia at 17 years old). There is clearly something wrong with me. I spoke to another US doctor that has wrote about persistent propecia side effects and he has now recommended clomid.

My questions are as follows:
1. Have you heard of these side effects from Avodart? If so, how long do they normally last?
2. What do you recommend in terms of treatment
3. Is clomid safe for me to take?

Please if you can offer any help at all that would be so kind of you.

Side effects are as follows:
sexual
low libido
loss of sponteanus erections
erectile dysfunction
loss of nightime erections
other
female breast development
higher pitch voice
trouble swallowing
no saliva production (ie no mucus in nose or mouth) - I think this had lead to dental issues
droopy eyelids
decrease in appetite
loss of muscle mass

mental
brainfog (loss of mental sharpness)

doctor1 MD

Hi,
Yes, a few of the symptoms that you have listed could be due to use of Finasteride, which has a role in treatment of what we call ' male pattern baldness'.
However, more often than not, these symptoms are reversible,i.e. they regress once treatment is discontinued.
So if you have...
