Questions and answers on "Metronidazole"

Hello there. I was prescribed Metronidazole by my OBGYN Monday. I was told to use at bedtime for 5 nights. I began my first night on Tue. Last night was 3/5. This morning I started my menstrual cycle. I was told it was okay, and to continue using the gel for my next 2 doses. MY question is.. if I can use a tampon while also using Metronidazole?? Help?!

doctor1 MD

Hi there ~

Using a tampon and metronidazole are two different things. Metronidazole is an antibiotic while tampons are protective mechanisms. They can and should be used in conjunction.

I hope this helps. Take care and have a lovely day !

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Metronidazole is an antibiotic and it should be given for a course as prescribed by the doctor without missing doses in between.

If you miss the dose, the effect of the antibiotic on the organism will decrease and there will be delay in clinical...

I have epilepsy and take 350mg at night of dilatin and take tetracycline birth control pill.

A walk in clinic doctor said I had bacteria vaginitis and put me in metronidazole 250mg twice a day. I was experiencing tingling in my lower legs and left arm. So the doc advise me to stop taking then. There were 8 pills left out of 28. I'm now getting brownish-red blood for 10 days now ( spotting) I have to change a pad a least twice a day. Is that a side affect to metronidazole or is it a chance I had a miscarriage cause my pregnancy results came back negative. I took two home pregnancy tests and one at the doctors.

I'm worried. And need to know if the results would become positive later?

Or is the bleeding just a side affect from metronidazole?

doctor1 MD

hi i am dr usman
well one of the most common side effects of metronidazole is dark yellow discolouration of body fluids like urine and even sweat along with metallic taste in mouth. whether your spotting is simply that it can only be told after you will complete the metronidazole cycle and it...

I am short of breath and having trouble swallowing. I"m taking Metronidazole(4 days) and my Dr. says I have to keep taking it, even though I feel I'm allergic to the medicine. He says it's the disease, not the med. causing the side effects. I have c-dif. What do you think?

doctor1 MD

What bugs does metronidazole work on that clarithromycin doesn't?

Reason:
I have a cellulitis infection on my shin. It flared up 5 or 6 weeks after falling off my bike and badly bashed 2x9 inches of my shin. There was no broken skin and i had managed to stop a huge hematoma forming by icing almost immediately. As soon as i noticed the heat spot and that my leg tended to swell when walking i went to a walk in clinic at my local cottage hospital and a nurse was confident it was a shin splint and told me to ice it on a rota.

4 days later it became very red in a small area. The very next day i sought help at an nhs hospital walk in GP centre.

Clarithromycin slow release was used 2daily for about a 3days with the infection still spreading slowly. The dose was then upped to 3 daily and non slow release but with a small improvement in efficacy. I have now been prescribed metronidazole as well and the infection is very very slowly going.

doctor1 MD

Hi!
welcome to HCM!
Clarithromycin has activity against a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria WHILE metronidazole acts on various protozoans and most Gram-negative and Gram-positive ANAEROBIC bacteria.

Advantages oF using metronidazole are the sensitivity to Gram-negative...

doctor1 MD

While taking Metronidazole for my third bout with C Diff, I experienced bad or changed taste, causing loss of appetite. Dr. changed prescription to Vancomycin and advised "taste" problem would soon be gone. But it did not. It is now about 3 months since stopping Metronidazole and no relief. Had my mouth and teeth checked but it was not the problem. Drs. and Pharmacists tell me my taste "should" return, b ut I have lost weight and am starting to form bad eating habits. Can you help? P.S. The C Diff has apparently passed.

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
Please follow the suggestions below...

Hi Seidbar,

It is true that Metronidazole can change taste to feeling a metallic taste in mouth. As you have shifted to Vancomycin, you are reporting the same changed taste.

Hi there, thanks for asking. Metronidazole can treat some of the infections of the urinary system, if it taken enough every day for a period of time. If it is taken for a shorter period than needed, a chronic infection will remain for a long time.
Metronidazole, by itself does not induce...

Hi i took metronidazole twice a day for 7 days for bacterial vaginosis and I noticed I had slurred speech, confusion, and unbalanced walking. How serious is/was this? I just finished the dosage two days ago and this did not occur the first time I completed a 7 day dosage of metronidazole.

My 5 year old son started having stomach cramps a month back with constipation and later followed by loose, watery stools . We consulted doctor1 insisted for ultra sound scan of stomach & prescribed Ofloxacin syrup for 3 days . Ultra sound scan said Multiple subcentimeter lymph nodal enlargement noted within mesentery . Doctor1 reviewed and said nothing to worry about this and no treatment for this and it will subside once infection goes off. After the treatment loose motions stopped but little stomach pain here and then with bloating continued. After a week, boy had some chocolates and little spicy food resulting in loose, watery stools and stomach cramps again. Doctor1 reviewed and prescribed ofloxacin metronidazole thinking its diarrhea. After giving it or 3 days, symptoms didn t reduce and vomiting started as well. We changed doctor & doctor2 reviewed and prescribed Ziprax 100 mg ( cefixime ) along with Domstal and ORS. We got Stool test report and it was normal with 2-5 puss cells. We also gave for stool culture and that report showed no culture. After reviewing the reports doctor said stop antibiotics (3 days over anyway) and with ORS he will be normal in few days. Now, from couple of days, vomiting sensation stopped but he is not able to digest all the food he used to take. Stomach cramps has reduced but not stopped. Bloating is still there but reduced. Still having greenish loose hard and then watery stools once or twice in a day. He is able to take light /soft food and we are giving it frequently with ORS. We are not able to understand why he is not becoming normal , its been a month already and we are worried a lot. Please help us with your suggestion. You can write to me at YYYY@YYYY Thanks, Prithvi
