Levonorgestrel

What is Levonorgestrel?

It belongs to a group of drugs progestins and is usually used after an unprotected intercourse of failed contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. Should be taken within 72 hours of the unprotected sex. Acts by preventing release of egg from ovary, prevents fertilization of egg and makes uterus hostile to implantation. Thus it is used as morning after pill.
