My GI prescribed imipramine for functional dyspepsia. It worked but it also caused urine retention, severe enough that I had to have an indwelling suprapubic catheter installed. Later I started taking the new Japanese drug Acotiamide for the fd. The imipramine was therefore dc'd. However the urine retention persists to a significant degree. Can anything be done about this?

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
Prostatic enlargement to be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I really appreciate your concern for the urinary symptoms. It is unfortunate that you had severe retention of the urine while taking Imipramine prescribed for functional dyspepsia. Retention of urine is one of the most...

Thank you for attending to my question. Because of insurance complications, I have to switch medications from Imipramine (Tofranil 150 mgs/day) to another SSRI, yet to be determined. My question is, how long will it take to completely flush the imipramine from my system before beginning the new meds? I've received conflicting answers from my PCP and psychiatrist. In other words, how long should I stop taking the imipramine before it is not in my system anymore. Thank you.

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
It will take about a week to flush out yes drug.

Detailed Answer:

Adult Nocturnal enuresis
I am a 23 years old girl and I wet my bed at night. The longest dry time used to be a week maximum but currently it's only one or two days if I am lucky. The first doctor I went to (I was 13 then I guess) prescribed Imipramine hydrochloride 25 mg. It did not improve my condition at all. The second doctor (I was 20) prescribed Imipramine hydrochloride 25 mg 3 times a day, Stimulan 800 mg 3 times a day and Neuroton 3 times a day. This combination made me fatigue and dizzy. I could not perform any activities or concentrate while taking it and my easy solution was to stop it. The last doctor prescribed Detrusitol 2 mg once a day, I took it for a week but there was absolutely no dry nights so I stopped taking it. I am so tired and exhausted and I am always so dehydrated due to losing massive amounts of fluids.

You may need to get the culture and sensitivity of the urine, and treatment accordingly.
I usually prescribe to my...

I have run out of my regular antidepressant, Imipramine 150 mg 1 per day, and won't be able to get a refill for 2 or 3 weeks. I have taken the Imipramine for 10 years, so would a change over to Duloxetine be worth the try for results? I am between Drs. and won't have A new prescriber until last of XXXXXXX Thank you..

doctor1 MD

I was on trazodone for 15 years and now find myself depressed. I asked my doctor to put me on something stronger or better for depression, but cannot take SSRIs, so I am put on imipramine plus Xanax. I find that the imipramine is not sedating and I use Xanax to sleep. Well, then I wake up as the Xanax doesn't keep me asleep all night so use more Xanax. Is there anything that can be added to imipramine for sleep? It is not sedating to me. Of course, I just started it and on 100 mg but will graduate to 150.

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Xanax is not a good medication for sleep, because it exits the system in a couple of hours and leads to waking up and rebound insomnia. There are a couple solutions. First, as imipramine doses are increased, it will...

I'm having severe anxiety attacks. I get heart palpitations, I sweat, I even shake sometimes. Is there anything that I can take for this? I already see an MFT for therapy once a week, but I don't know what else to do. I also take clomipramine, which helps most of the time, but I still go nuts several times in a week and I am absolutely frightened about it.
