Flomax

What is Flomax?

Flomax is a popular brand name for generic drug Tamsulosin which is an antagonist of alpha1A adrenoceptors in the prostate gland. It is usually used for symptomatic relief in a condition called as Benign hypertrophy of prostate (BHP) where there are symptoms of difficulty voiding urine, urinary incontinence, urgency, dribbling etc.

Questions and answers on "Flomax"

My dad is 87 years old. He takes flomax for bph and travatan drops for glaucoma. He has mild high blood pressure but won't take his bp meds because it makes him feel to bad. He recently began having high blood sugar so I began looking at his medications. I now know that flomax has been causing many of his symptoms of dizziness and fatigue. I also read that flomax can raise blood sugar. He has taken flomax for many years. My question is what alternative medicine can he take for bph with less side effects. Or would surgery at his age help if all he has is an enlarged prostate. My concern is the years of taking flomax would result in no urinary control after surgery.

doctor1 MD

Hello,

No, surgery would not have such after effects. Now a days, endoscopic surgery is done by urologist under spinal(regional) anesthesia and not on general anesthesia. It is quite safe.

But you need to control his blood pressure and blood sugars prior to surgery.

Hope I have answered your query....

I have vivid nightmares every night and I have a hard time getting back to sleep. Every time this happens I notice my bladder is full. This started about the time I was prescribed Flomax and Doxepin. Beside Dosepin I also take Valium, Restoril,Risperdal, and Clonodine at night.

Can a full bladder cause nightmares and difficulty getting back to sleep?

doctor1 MD

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
It is unlikely that a full bladder is causing you nightmares and difficulty in going back to sleep.
The likely possibility is that you notice a full bladder when you wake up due to your nightmares.
Nightmares is a side effect in people receiving Risperidal and I would...

I need to have a hernia operation done and I am concerned about a recent case of trouble with a swoolen prostate that locked up my ability to urinate for about 5 days. Was on flomax for about 3 weeks and no problems for over a month now. Concerned about a possible problem with the upcoming surgery swellen the prostate and causing a urinating problem post surgery. Should I start the flomax a week before surgery or is there something else to prevent that problem?

doctor1 MD

Hi,
I recently was hospitalized for a severe prostate infection. I was given large quantities of Levoquin and Flomax IV in the hospital. I immediately developed pain in my achiles tendons and neuropathy in both legs, as well as back pain After the hospital I had continued the Levoquin and flomax in oral form. All problems worsened. The doctor felt "after the fact" that is was the Levoquin and change the antibiotic to Bactrim, but kept the Flomax. The back pain has lessened but neither pain in the feet or legs has lessened. Could the Flomax be creating these pains?

Thanks
Mark

doctor1 MD

no Flomax does not causes this symptom, these all are due to levofloxacin which may even persist for 3-4 months even after the withdrawal of the drug. get it managed by a orthopaedics
thanks.
