Questions and answers on "Clopidogrel"

I take clopidogrel because I have a stent to open a blocked artery that helps me digest my food. I have never had a stroke. I have some side effects from the clopidogrel that are harmful to my chronic asthma condition. I am an intrinsic asthmatic, steroid dependent. Can I safely substitute baby aspirin for my daily dosage of clopidogrel?

doctor1 MD

Dear Sir/ Madam
Thanks for your query.
No. You can not. This is so because of two reasons. First of all, aspirin may induce certain type of asthma itself. Second, clopidogrel is better drug in preventing stent thrombosis if we consider it as solo therapy in comparison to aspirin. Mostly we use...

Dear Dr, I am in a quandry. Recently I had very very mild changes in my cardiogram. The doctor prescribed me deplat CV - which has clopidogrel bisulphate 75 mg, atorvastatin 10 mg and aspirin 75 mg. He has also given nitroglycerin half morning, half afternoon. I read from google, administering clopidogrel with aspirin has added to risk of coronary deaths. We cannot discontinue also clopidogrel or aspirin therapy suddenly. If I reduce it to half the dose by separately buying clopidogrel and ecosprin, can it save me from above danger. I am caught between devil and deep sea. Can you help me ? My job is not strenuous. S P Iyer

doctor1 MD

Hello. The combination of aspirin and clopidogrel for one year after suffering a coronary syndrome is right according to Clinical Practice Guides. The association of aspirin and clopidogrel does not increase the risk of coronary deaths, there is a slight increased risk of bleeding,it is...

Hi and thank you for your reply. I am taking clopidogrel 75 MG, also have stents since 2004, have had a lower bypass of a stent in 2006. also I am on Simvastatin 40 MG for low cholesterol reading as well as high triglyceride readings. up until last month I was taking 75MG Plavix since 2006. also I take 24MG Hydrochlorothiazide for HBP. along with one low dose Bayler 81MG per/day.and last I take fluticasone Propionate Nasal spray 50mcg. I felt wonderful until I started taking Clopidogrel one month ago, in the Simvastatin? I get very tired very fast, have dark yellow urine, a greater amount of muscle pain. ( I have RA but not being treated) and have notice a big change in my vison and a lot of bruising! I never had these problems when I was taking Plavix? EDF is much worse! I am a male at age 63. Also I might mention I have not had lab done in over a year, and never had lab done let on these drugs Simvastatin & Clopidogrel? I have Medicare ins., but it appears they don't allow lab but once a year. Been wanting to see my doctor but having problems getting a appointment set up? So ins. would not pay for Plavix so he called in this Clopidogrel! But no lab in a year, so he has no idea of my problems! Last time I saw him was April, 2013. I welcome your input. Thank you, Robert Stevenson

Hello,

Your muscle pain, fatigue is due to Simvastatin which can cause Myopathy; rhabdomyolysis, fatigue. To confirm go for serum Creatine phosphokinase level.

You need to lower the dosage of Simvastatin (Adults dosage PO 5 to 40 mg/day in the evening).Clopidogrel/Plavix is not the offending...

I am 71 now and having hypertension for the past 25 years; taking medicines for BP on regular basis. In April, had a discomfort in the chest, got myself admitted in the cardiac wing of the hospital whereby went through angiography that doctors termed it as double vessel disease; Stress thelium indicated area of ischaemia 10%, carotid doppler revealed Right and left IMT: 0.8 mm. I was told that I could lead a normal life, do regular brisk walk and continue with prescribed BP medicines that are as under:
1.     Natrilix S R
2.     Meteropolol 50
3.     Asomex 7.5
4.     Remipril 10
5.     Ecosprin 75
6.     Clopidogrel 75
I was prescribed Clopidogrel 75 in October 2009 as I had a few episodes of blurred vision for which an MRI was conducted and its findings read as under:
MR findings are suggestive of few tiny chronic lacunar infarcts in the supratantorial white matter. No acute infarct/sellar-suprasellar mass seen.
In the month of July-August this year I felt discomfort in the abdomen area that appeared as if it had something to do with heart but the cardiologist having examined me related it to some problem in the abdomen and referred me to a gastrontologist. He was of the opinion that the said discomfort which also included mild momentary prickings in the abdomen area could be some nerve related problem since blood examinations revealed B-12 deficiency (243) and Vit D deficiency (13.85) for which I was asked to have methylcobalamin injections on weekly basis for a month followed by monthly injections and a XXXXXXX of calciterol 60,000 every week in addition to Ganaton total capsule to be taken once daily BF. Besides, got endoscopy and colonoscopy done. Findings of each are as below:
Colonoscopy: Normal Ileo colonoscopy
Endoscopy: patulous LES; Non erosive gastropathy
Both the cardiologist and Gasteroentologists advised me to discontinue clopidogrel and increased asprin from 75 mg to 150 mg.
Last week, after discontinuing clopidogrel for about 20 days I had a feeling of blurred vision for about 20 minutes which I had not felt since I had started clopidigrel in October 2009.
I confess that I have resumed taking clopidogrel without consulting any one. However, at the same time I have started feeling some pressure on the left side of the abdomen just below the ribs and occasional mild pricking in the abdomen area.

Seeking Advice:
Should there be some other medicine that could replace clopidogrel and/or could I take clopidogrel with some antidote such as Vizylac or some food such as curd.
XXXXXXX

doctor1 MD

Hello XXXXXXX,

Thanks for the query.

The pain abdomen has been consistently related to use of clopidogrel in your case and so you may have to discontinue it.

The blurring of vision is not explained by the MRI findings that you had earlier. It needs to be investigated this time again.

Clopidogrel...

I am 60 year old STEMI patient - right artery blockage removed within 90 minutes with angioplasty July 19th 2012. No stent fitted. I have been on standard meds - aspirin 75, clopidogrel 75, ramapril 2.5, rosuvastatin 10mg, Isosorbide mononitrate 25mg. Minimal heart damage. Steady bpm and pulse.
125/75 and 65bpm when resting. I get mild angina during exercise and mild angina in bed sometimes. No sweats or nausea. I use GTN spray to help. I have signs of dyspepsia (upper stomach cramp) . I have been thinking of discontinuing the aspirin and clopidogrel to see if my dyspepsia signs will dissappear. then re-introducing 1 by one or using supplements (nattokinase).
3 questions.
1. Should I try a PPI for the dyspepsia - if so which is the best in combination with my meds.
2. whats prognosis for restenosis with angioplasty only. (I have read 6months ish)
3. whats the recommended way of stopping clopidogrel / aspirin.
