Questions and answers on "Atenolol"

Hello,
I have been on the lowest dose possible of Atenolol 12.5mg daily for my blood pressure for about a 1.5 years, before this I was on Metapropol. But recently lost 23 pounds over the span of a year and was experiencing real bad dizzy spells. My blood pressure has been real good, even a little low, so my doctor told me to stop the Atenolol last week. Since I stopped I have been experiencing my heart racing and a kind of nervousness in my chest and body. Is this from the Atenolol? I suffer from anxiety anyways, not on medicine for it, but was wondering if getting off the Atenolol can cause anxiety??

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Atenolol belongs to the family of drugs called beta blockers. It can be associated with a decrease in heart rate.
It is possible that the discontinuation would have resulted in a subsequent increase in your heart rate.

These types of medications would control...

doctor1 MD

Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

I am sorry to say that YOU are NOT right...
The pacemaker will be suppressed when the heart rate goes up / it wont prevent it from rising.
If the heart rate falls below a certain limit, pacemaker takes over...and its upper limit is pre-fixed...
Your heart...

HI, I am a 50 yr old male and was suffering from PVC since my early 30s. I started taking atenolol 25mg 11 years ago (about age 39. Now taking 50mg). I recently moved overseas and saw an internist because I felt like I was urinating too often. Blood surger was fine, so they did an ultrasound on my batter and prostat. He says I have BHP. But, in the interview, I told him I was taking Atenolol for 11 years. He said that long term use of this drup can cause diabetes and screw around with hormones. He prescribed Isoptin SR 240 mg. He said I should take half the atenolol (25 mg) and half the Isopitn (apparently 120 mg) for one month and then take half again of the atenolol and increase the Isoptin so that after 2 months I am completely off the Atenolol. Does this sound like a correct thing to do? I was doing fine - as far as I can tell - on the atenolol but am concerned about long term use.

doctor1 MD

Hello Sir,

I have read your medical history carefully, As VPCs are usually not harmful and need no treatment until unless they become bothersome for the patient. In your case as you are taking medicine for it from so many year and its doing its job nicely so i would like to continue with Atenolol...

Hi. I've read that atenolol can release histamine in the body. Can this cause your seasonal allergies to be worse? I only take 25mg of atenolol. I have a tickle in my throat and chest when I breathe in... Wasn't sure if the atenolol could cause worsening of allergies? Thank you..

doctor1 MD

Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern. Atenolol is predominantly beta blockers and anti hypertensive. It has no significant effect on histamines. If you have allergy then you should take antihistaminics like chlorpheneremine malate or cetrizine. Steroids can be...

My bo was 144/104 on Thurs. I had forgotten to take my atenolol 50mg that day. My MD started me on lidinopril 5mg once a day as add on to the atenolol. I am obese but my weight is stable from my last visit in Oct my bloodeork is normal with no cholesterol or trigliceride concerns. I am not diabetic. Why would my pressure be that high from one missed dose?

doctor1 MD

Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

Missing a single dose is unlikely to shoot the pressure up very high.
One has to look for other reasons.

Sudden withdrawal of beta-blockers (atenolol is one) can cause rebound.

Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck...

I have Graves' disease. My thyroid levels are under control and I take atenolol. The last few days I have been experiencing heaviness, little sharp pains in my chest, breathlessness and a unwell feeling in my bowels. I don't know if it's from drinking caffeine or a reaction to my atenolol. I take my pulse daily and after medication it goes done to 48-50 beats. Without atenolol it's 70-80.

doctor1 MD

Hi
Thank you for contacting healthcare magic.
I would advice you to have an ECG as thyroid hormones have effect on heart tissue & for serum TSH levels to see if its normal or not. Even if thyroid levels are normal, go for ECG once to rule out any cardiac problem. Atenolol doesn't cause such...

My husband found out his blood pressure was 193/136 when he needed stiches. We went to the dr the next day and his dr took blood and urine and sent him for an ultrasound on his one kidney. Dr states has low potassium and protein in urine. His bp has been that high for almost 2 weeks and all they have done is given him atenolol now 100mg and amlodipine besylate 2.5mg to lower it. I am concerned for his kidney. At 5pm tonight he took his bp again and it was 160/120. Do you think we should go to the hospital?

I was dispensed the wrong medication by Boots. I had been taking 100mg atenolol daily instead of 100mg of allopurinol for gout. I ended up in hospital bradycardic and, apparently, very close to an M.I. I only have one remaining kidney with mild hydronephrosis.I only took 2 doses and the last one I took was last Wednesday evening. I keeping getting a very lethargic, dizzy and going quite pale, whenever I get up to do something. Is it still normal to feel unwell after 5 days without taking the drug. I realise the half-life of atenolol is only 6 hours, so I am rather worried as to why I am still feeling similarly to how I was last week.
