What is Wernicke-korsakoff syndrome?

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is caused by lack of thiamine (vitamin B1) which is a common condition amongst heavy drinkers. The main symptoms of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome are loss of memory, confusion about time and place, drowsiness, loss of spontaneity and poor balance.
