Questions and answers on "Thrombophlebitis"

I had a blood test done on Friday and it was unusually painful when the needle was put in. When the technician switched to the 2nd vial it was so painful that I yelped and she removed the needle. She drew the remainder of the needed blood from my other arm and it was fine. It is now Monday and the site of the first blood draw (left arm) is still sore. I have no swelling or bruising at all. Just a sharp pain sometimes when I straighten or twist that arm and a dull constant ache at that site and somewhat in the bicep.
I'm female and 53 years old. I've had lots of bloodwork in the past but never experienced this before. Right now I'm figuring it will go away with a bit more time but was curious what it might be and whether I need to go see my Dr. or if I can just wait it out.

Hello,

Thanks for the query.

I presume the technician used the cubital vein in the cubital fossa to draw the blood.

Most probably you may have developed a thrombophlebitis. This could be causing the soreness radiating to the biceps. Occasionally median nerve which is nearby may have been...

doctor1 MD

Hi,
It seems that you might be having thrombophlebitis due to some exreavasation of blood or some vascular capillary damage.
Consult your doctor and with one course of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medicine course you will be alright.
Apply thrombophob cream locally.
Ok and take care.

I was in the hospital Thurs and Fri and had an IV in right arm. Sat/Sun I noticed a hard, red warm lump a couple inches above the IV site which is still sore. Saw urgent care yesterday and they though cellulitis? put me on 2 antibiotics but said go straight to ER if got any worse. The redness has disappaited but the lump is extending up to inside of elbow now. Is this really something that potentially serious? I read a lot of scary things on line but generally don't fill too bad. But achy a lot.

Hello and welcome to healthcare forum.
From your history it seems that you are suffering from thrombophlebitis of upper limb.
To know weather it involves only superficial veins or deep vein also, go for colour doppler examination of the affected limb and after that visit a surgeon for further...

I have only IV d prescriptions a handful of times, so I m basically clueless. But I was experimenting and tried to enter a vein near my outer ankle bone about 4 days ago. There is a pea sized knot on my ankle bone now that is hard, red, and very painful. The surrounding area is swollen. It does not feel hot to the touch. I am afraid to see my doctor because I don t want to explain how I got this.

doctor1 MD

Hi,
From history it seems that you might have some extravasation of blood or injecting material causing this problem.
There is another possibility of having thrombophlebitis.
Apply ice pack 2-3 times a day.
Go for one course of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medicine course after consulting...

My daughter recently had antibiotic therapy after serious mva..it was about a month ago..her left anticubital has a large swollen..red..hot to touch area..took to er lastnight bc appears to be getting worse and very painful for her. I am a rn myself so have seen thrombophlebitis but it appears much worse than I have seen. They did xray of elbow which showed slight soft tissue damage and blood work didn t show any kind of superinfection. She had a gm of rocephin and is taking keflex..asa and ibuprofen and applying heat.was told if not better in 48hours to come back in. There has been no improvement thus far..24hours and very swollen and painful..I am concerned that the longer we wait the worse the tissue damage might get and would like to avoid any type of surgical procedure bc she is currently undergoing reconstructive surgeries of face and eyelid..also .what r the chance of an embolism traveling to lungs etch from this Type of area such as the anticubital? Capillary refill is good and pulse good but very concerned bc symptoms of infection, pain and immobility. Please advise me on danger of waiting for additional intervention

Dear Doctor, I would appreciate your opinion a lot !! My mom is 72 years old. She has got for a while varicose veins in both legs around area of the knee. Last month she developed superficial thrombophlebitis of her right leg which is now resolved. The great saphenous vein was also affected, precisely 1/3 of this vein was affected in the upper area of the lower leg and lower area of the thigh. 1. She went under Fraxiparine sc therapy 2x per day for 10 days. I saw online that sometimes this therapy could be prolonged up to 1 month. Could you please tell me in which cases is that, is it in the case when the great saphenous vein is affected as well ? Her current therapy is Detralex tabl. (Daflon) 2x1, Lioton cream 100.000 IU/ 100g, Aspirin 100 mg 1x1 and compressive/supportive thights. 2. Please let me know your opinion about this therapy. What is the best dosage for Aspirin ? 3. Are there are any other medication or supplements that we can add and what would be the best dosage. ( krill oil, vit. E, statins, what about Plavix (Clopidogrel) instead of Aspirin her Plt are 150x10*9 on the scale 150-400x10*9) ? 4. Is it true that krill oil can be use instead of statins ? 5. What diagnostic procedures should be best to run in her case? 6. Also, I found out, that she should make a short walks often. Please let me know how often they should be and for how long? And for longs walks in the park, is it any time limitation? 7. Is it right that blood clot can be dissolved naturally by time? 8. My most important question is your opinion regarding surgery. Should we go for it? And if yes, what would be better for her, to go for classic surgery treatment or laser and why? 9.Should it be done ASAP or is it any time that we need to wait for surgery or laser or any other treatment as she had thrombophlebitis ? In case that laser is choice, can it be applied on the great saphenous vein ? Is it any risk that blood clot can migrate to another vein during laser treatment ? Sorry for asking all this, but its only cos I would like to do what is best for my mom. Thank you so much for helping me in this matter, its appreciated a lot !! My very best, Mila.

I have just found out that I have superficial thrombophlebitis in my left thigh. I also have Sarcoidosis, but have been off my meds since August last year with no sign of it coming back. Are the 2 likely to be linked?? Is there anything I shouldn't be doing and should I be worried?? I am male, 34, 97kg, 5'11" and just wondered whilst I am waiting to see my doctor.
