Temporal arteritis

Questions and answers on "Temporal arteritis"

I have what appears to be a pimple on the top of my head that keeps coming back - I recently saw a rheumatologist who thinks I have temporal arteritis and wants to do a biopsy of a cerebral vein. Is it customary to have ulcers associated with these arteries/veins with TA ?

Welcome to Healthcare Magic
Good day
Ulcers are not commonly seen unless there is skin damage. Temporal arteritis presents with one sided headache and possible vision disturbance. It is not known to cause ulcers.

I have had a dull headache for a couple of days and now a vein under my right eye is visibly pulsing, I think in time with my heartbeat, although it does seem a little more erratic than a heartbeat. My vision seems okay.

I have just bee diagnosed with the symptoms of temporal arteritis. I had a bioposy done today but they have started me on prednisone which has helped with the tenderness on the temples. The problem is that I am to fly out for vacation that day after I see the Dr for the results. Is there anything that should preclude me from flying?

Please get back if you...

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The biopsy for diagnosing temporal arteritis (TA) is done by a surgeon. Careful that they do not do both sides at once. They should only do one side but they should take a long enough piece of the...

I have intermittant pain the my temples, with some noticeable swelling of the arteries, but no major headache today, but i have had constant headache pain for weeks. Since I am a migraine sufferer, I haven't take any special notice, but lately I have a different headache sensations, such as pain across the forehead, throbbing temples, and sometimes when I read for long periods of time (fixated on a computer screen), I notice extreme blurring in my right eye, which is also the side of the head where the arteries are most visible. I am a 52 year old women in satisfactory health, without chronic ailments/meds, aside from headaches. At what point is it necessary to go for emergency care? What is a "new" headache? Is it excruciating pain?

My question concerns the H1N1 vaccine (2013-14) while using prednisone for recovery from temporal arteritis. I started with IV infusion beginning October 4 2013 to halt loss of sight and have worked down to 20mg. daily since. I am in Canada and have the care of a family doctor, and ophthalmologist and a rheumatologist. The question of H1N1, however has recently arisen here in Nova Scotia, aand I d appreciate your opinion and expertise on-line. Alex Pierce
