I have been diagnosed with severe peripheral neuropathy and have been put on Gabapentin and Amitriptalene for the pain, which is so severe at times it is debilitating. My blood sugars are beginning to become controlled, but for years were not. I recently was hospitalized for a foot infection , which led to having 3 sudden cardiac arrests. All heart related tests came back negative or clear and no reason for the SCA was given. Now I live each day wondering if I will have another SCA, is there anything I can do to help myself get over this?

doctor1 MD

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
I understand your predicament.
Sudden cardiac arrest is a condition which is significantly more common in people with heart disease. Additionally, diabetes is a major risk factor for diabetes. However, it is also known to occur with no known risk factors. Many a times,...

I am having numbness on mid back just above bra line. I noticed this while drying after showers. I believe this has been going on since my lap chole in February. I do have Raynaud's. I did have a one flare up of peripheral neuropathy I belive in Janurary before my lap chole that sent me to ER. Was taking a shower and my arms/legs stung and I felt like the skin was numb. I called my family doctor and they sent me to the ER where they diagnosed the incident as peripheral neuropathy-idiopathic I belive-unknown cause. I am questioning whether to go to my primary care, neurologist, or a rheumatologist. I am normally of very good health. I have had no major illnesses. I do not smoke. I do not do drugs. I do not drink. I do exercise. Since the gallbladder troubles, I feel somehow this is connected? Not sure where to go. The numbness is very concerning on my back. When it is pinched I can feel pressure but no pain. I am also still having pain that comes and goes in right upper quadrant in front - abdomen. The surgeon stated at f/u it could be muscular related and wrote it off - did not seem worried. I am still having this coming and going. Just want to put all current symptoms. LFTs are normal.

My father is 80 and has peripheral neuropathy. He is not a diabetic. He had a bad case of sciatica after injuring it while shoveling about 6 or 7 years ago and started treatment with injections; however he only had one injection before he was diagnosed with coronary artery disease and underwent open heart surgery, so he only had one shot in his lower back. He has had a few MRI's and CT scans and it appears that nothing shows up that could be pressing on his back causing the numbness. Is there anything at all that may help him or can you recommend another test that might determine whether or not there is something causing his feet to be numb?

doctor1 MD

I have neuropathy in my feet and legs. I just started taking 3 gabapentin - 300mg and two metanx every day. When I had treatment for prostrate cancer my doctor started me on Centrum Silver. Is it okay to continue taking this vitamin along with the two prescriptions that my doctor has me taking? My son-in-law thought that the combination of the three pills would cause a high B-12 problem.
