In the plural (diseases) a generic term for a heterogenous group of disorders, all affecting motor neurons in the brain, spinal cord, or both, including spinal muscle atrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, progressive bulbar paralysis, and primary lateral sclerosis.
