Leukoplakia

What is Leukoplakia?

Leukoplakia is a condition where thickened white patches form in the mouth. Unlike the whitened areas of thrush, or fungal infection, these cannot be scraped off. Leukoplakia usually isn't dangerous, but it can sometimes be important. Although most leukoplakia patches are noncancerous (benign), some show early signs of cancer. Sometimes cancer occurs adjacent to a patch of leukoplakia.
