A year ago my husband's bladder was removed due to cancer. At the time he had iron deficiency so for the past year he has been on iron Supplements. He is 69, 5' 9" and weights 175 pounds. He was removed from this regimen in January as his iron was maintaining itself. Now in April, he is deficient again. Now he also was diagnosed with a leaky heart valve but they don't plan on doing anything with this right now. Could the leaky heart valve be causing the iron deficiency. His ferritin count is 7 right now.

I have gained 5 lbs in 8 weeks, and my stomach is protruding more and my lower legs around my ankles and feet are swelling mildly. I haven't missed any cycles and I had a blood test done March 13 that came back negative for pregnancy (level less than 2) and my last sexual intercourse was January 13. The tests also confirmed severe iron deficiency anemia, with 3% total iron saturation.
Are my symptoms normal for iron deficiency? I keep being anxious re pregnancy. Thank you.

doctor1 MD

Hello and thank you for sending your question.

Iron deficiency can cause a multitude of symptoms. I do not Think it is common for swelling or weight gain to be associated with iron deficiency. I would encourage you to obtain another pregnancy test to rule this out completely.

Also, did your...

Doctor told that it is due to iron deficiency and advised me to take Raricap Forte (Iron-25 mg and Folic acid- 0.3 mg). After using 6 pills, today I got green stools after having a lot of water and butter milk. What could be the reason for green stools?

I am a 24 year old female and do horseback riding. I ve been having some issues with cracking sounds coming from my knees - and sometimes pain when it occurs - whenever I climb up stairs. I m also unable to keep my knees bent only slightly (standing upright but knees bent) for a long period of time, before pain sets in. I ve been riding since 2007 and have never had this problem before, it only became apparent recently. Could it be because of an iron deficiency? I had to take iron supplements a few years ago for a period of 3 months and picked up some more this morning because a few of the other symptoms I m experiencing also seem to point to iron deficiency. Kind regards
