Initially hearing loss

Questions and answers on "Initially hearing loss"

Hi Doctor: I have a temporary loss of hearing that comes and goes. I was hit with ultra high frequency that you can not hear. The cause is a temporary feeling of hearing loss like the ear is full of water, or plug up. When I scratch around the ear and down the neck I get the sound of a echo in the ear. What do you think the frequency is doing? affecting the nerve, the blood artery , or the muscle

doctor1 MD

hello and welcome to HCM,

Since you basically have a hearing loss that is causing discomfort to you i would suggest you do these:
1. Get an audiometry done, both pure tone audiometry and impedance audiometry to understand the nature of your hearing loss and also to confirm the diagnosis and...

Hello Soumya,
Some forms of hearing loss are definitely inherited, while others are not.

Genetic forms of hearing loss must be distinguished from acquired (non-genetic) causes of hearing loss. The genetic forms of hearing loss are diagnosed by otologic, audiologic, and physical examination,...

Hello, Our peadiatric surgeon has suggest my 5 month old baby boy to have injectable antibiotics of Advent 150Mg and Amikacin 100 mg thru IV. My baby was diagonised with inflammatory pathology on his left, which shows that there is a minimal peritesticular fluid. Is it safe to give Amikacin ? As i hear that this would lead to hearing loss and kindney problems. Such kind of messages do scare us? We are desperate to have our baby normal. Is there any chance of such side effects arising at a later stage of his age ?

doctor1 MD

Hello Doctor, thank you taking my question. About a year ago my two year old grandchild was diagnosed with hearing loss. What started as a mild hearing loss on the left ear at birth is now a severe and permanent loss in both ears. A genetic link was found and a CT scan also revealed semi circular canal dehiscence in both ears. She now wears hearing aids. My question is, can the findings of the superior semicircular canal dehiscence be a contributing factor to the hearing loss, it was never explored further by her ENT. Yes, the genetic factor exists, there is no denying this. But I have also read that sometimes conditions such as hearing loss are caused by a combination of genetic mutations and non-genetic factors. I believe these conditions are said to be “multifactorial”. I have read that sometimes, it is not possible to tell if a mutation is the cause of a condition, or just a coincidence. Apparently, people who have multifactorial conditions often are born into families with no other affected members, which is the case for us. Thank you for your time and attention, XXXXXXX

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
Hearing loss is always multifactorial

Hi, I am taking several drugs for a heart condition (Coumadin, Amiodorone, Pravastatin, Carvedilol, Terazosin, Diovan, Aspirin). Is it possible that heart drugs can cause hearing loss? If so - is the hearing loss permanent?

Thanks for your help. XXXXXXX

doctor1 MD

Hi

In the list of the drugs mentioned by you, aspirin is one of the medications which have got the potency to cause hearing loss. Toxic...

I am 40 years old male and I was diagnosed with profound sudden SNHL in my left ear 2 weeks back. Since I had dizziness and vomitting, consulted the ENT on the next day of hearing loss and received 64 mg ZEMPRED for 3 days and 32 MG ZEMPRED for 7 days and it is being tapered currently. On 9th and 13th day of hearing loss, I also took IT. This is the 14th day and I still do not have any improvement. I also took Complamina and Acyclovir for a week. Is there a chance I will be able to recover? How long will it generally take for a recovery? Any other alternate therapy I can look for? Thanks to let me know.

doctor1 MD

Hello,
Sudden SNHL is a difficult situation .
Even after oral steroids you have no response then you can go for Intratympanic Steroid therapy ie putting steroid injections in middle ear .
You also need to have MRI scan to rule out any lesion pressing over the nerve.
Continue consultation with...

doctor1 MD

Hi
Do you have any hearing loss and any ear discharge. Have you been subjected to a thorough ENT evaluation by your Doctor. Usually crackling sound could be due to fluid collection in the ear. Usually if there is no hearing loss and ear discharge, there is less chance for perforation of ear drum....

Nothing to worry about parmenent damage as you are given full course of antibiotics.
By this time your damage ear drum might have healed up.
Do not put any cotton bud to clean the ears as it might cause further damage.
Keep cotton plug in your ears while taking bath to prevent water going...

Our 17 year old daughter was diagnosed with Digeorge syndrom at 3 months of age. She has had major cardiac issues with 3 truncus artiriosis repairs, frequent ear infections as a small child causing hearing loss (2 sets of ear tubes , gone now) and required speech therepy due to her inablility to completely close her soft pallet. Her last surgery was in 2009. About a year ago she began having severe anxiety attacks . These attacks came on one random day shortly after being treated for an ear infection with antibiotics that caused severe stomach problems. So we started taking probiatics. These new symptoms include naussa, heartburn , cramping, chest pain and difficulty swollowing. All these symptoms occur multiple time per day, each day and last a varying length of time and are never the same in intensity or combination of symptoms. We have tried to asstablish a pattern but failed. We saw a gastroenterologist that did a scope procedure and only found a small irritation due to her heartburn. I have followed through with her current providers up to this point with the exception of seeing a therapist because my husband (her father) and I are old school and having trouble believing this is all caused by anxiety. We want to have an MRI or something to rule out anything else and all her providers keep pushing therapy for anxiety. We are at our wits end and don t know what to do, move forward with the currnet plan or start fresh somewhere else. Virtually all of her procedures were handled at C.S. Mott s Children s Hospital at the University of Michigan and up until this point we have been extremely happy with all her care and providers. Any advice or imformation would be greatly appriciated. We have no insurance although she is covered by Medicaid/ Children s Special Health Care, so to top everything off we are omewhat limited on what control we have over her care. Is there a connection between Digeorge syndrom and gastrointestinal issues? Help! She has suffered enough already. -Nancy Bouchard

Hi, Since past 7 months I am experiencing Tinnitus in my right ear with partial hearing loss. Though I have consulted many doctors & taken advised medication for the same (no cancer detected in Brain MRI, Audiometry Tests show almost 60% hearing loss, Complemina Retard continued for almost 3 months), yet the problem still persists. I do not feel any nausea / headache / dizzy / anything else. I wanted to know if this is curable at all and if so then what are kinds of treatments options available ? Thanks in advance. Regards, Nitin

I am in las vegas and need to get back to my home in montreal canada. I have an ear infection that does not seem to be clearing up despite 5 days of antibiotics. I have seen two doctors in a clinic and was referred to the er. The er doctos were unable to see the eardrum clearly. Right now I canot hear from the ear at all. The doctors think this is due to fluid and not a perforated eardrum. I am now scheduled on a direct flight to montreal tomorrow, but am wonderiing if it would be sfaer to drive? I do not want to have any permanent hearing loss

Hi, I've been diagnosed with early stages of pneumonia, this came after a viral infection which I had for 2 weeks, the doc has prescribed me antibiotics which I have been taking for 2 days, its still very early days in terms of the treatment but I'm also experiencing SEVERE hearing loss in both ears, this came about the same time as the pneumonia. Is this normal as my research into pneumonia doesn't really mention bilateral hearing loss. I'm also experiencing bouts of extreme confusion. I am 37, don't smoke and normally fit and well.
Many Thanks
Anthony
