Hyperthyroidism

What is Hyperthyroidism?

The thyroid gland produces a hormone thyroxine responsible for various body functions. When the thyroid gland is overactive, there is excessive thyroxine ( thyrotoxicosis ) which leads to various complications such as sweating, tremors, thyroid storm. This is called hyperthyroidism, commonly treated with drugs or surgery, depending on the cause.

Questions and answers on "Hyperthyroidism"

I have been taking Neomercazole for hyperthyroidism (which i got during pregnancy mostly) Started with 30 mcg per day before 18 months and now on 5mcg per day. Had lost 8 kgs due to hyperthyroidism and have gained 20 kgs, overall weith gain of 12 kgs. Can i go on a Hcg diet for weight loss or will that be taking risk with hyperthyroidism ?

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any...

Why don't doctors really know the relationship between hyperthyroidism and weight gain? After years of chronic fatigue, a visibly pronounced butterfly buldge in my neck, and a weight gain of 50 lbs in one year, I have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Apparently I have a "hot" nodule...I have read volumes of there is no relationship. Ok, if there is no relationship between my sudden weight gain (I have always been at weight or under weight) and hyperthyroidism....what is really going on with my health?

doctor1 MD

I am a 48 yr old woman who has supposedly gone through menopause. Recently was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and the treatment went all the way into hyperthyroidism. In the meantime, my breasts have became unusually painful and the nipples are extremely sensitive. Also, there is excessive moisture around my vaginal and anal area. It has become quite a problem and sometimes has a fishy odor.

Hey, Im a 25 year old male. I have been having symptoms of hypothyroidism and a few of hyperthyroidism, such as cold hands and feet, sensitivity to cold, dry skin, I never sweat even when exercising, low heart rate ( 52 BPM resting) but also have social anxiety and nervousness. I recently had a blood test done at a near by lab for cheap. TSH     1.580 Thyroxine (T4)     8.2 ug/dL T3 Uptake     35% Free Thyroxine Index     2.9 Do you see any problems there? I can t go to a doctor because i have no health insurance and have no money. I also read that hypothyroidism can play a part in delayed puberty. I didn t see any development until i was 16/17 and still look very young and feel underdeveloped. Is there anything else that could cause these symptoms? Should I get more blood work done?
