Gout

What is Gout?

Gout is a kind of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. An abnormality in handling uric acid and crystallization of these compounds in joints can cause attacks of painful arthritis, kidney stones, and blockage of the kidney filtering tubules with uric acid crystals, leading to kidney failure. The joint at the base of the big toe is the most common site of gout attack.

Hello. I read your query and I am sorry about your health issues.

I am a 44-year-old kidney donor and am experiencing gout. Can the gout damage my remaining kidney? Are the drugs used for gout toxic to the kidneys? I am 6'2 and 215 pounds and a vegetarian. The pain is very disabling. I see a nephrologist on Friday, because my PCP cannot get the gout under control. I have taken two courses of steroids and the joint is still swollen and stiff.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Most of the drugs used in the treatment of gout can harm your kidneys. Generally drugs including NSAIDS and Colchicine are used for the treatment of gout and both of them can cause renal damage on...

What is the best medication to cure gout.? at present I'm on a medication for gout on tablets known as Lengout, but this medication doesn't seem to be working much at all. I've been getting gout since i use to drink the juice from a lemmon like fruit, known as lemonade. I stopped drinking the lemonade tree juice . but last year i also suffered from gout by eating the oranges that I grow in my back yard, I suspected that the orange tree was contaminated by the insects during polination from the lemonade tree, as both the orange tree, and the lemade tree flowers at the same time, and both trees belong to the citrus family .But i've never had any gout any gout problems from the oranges until recently ,if that is the case . But now I've got gout again, and it seems that the cause of it this time is from my tomatoes, because i've just picked and ate a few tomatoes , the first tomatoes of the season.and a few days later I got gout. But i've never suffered any gout at all from tomatoes previously.
I aso drink a lot of coffee, but so far coffee doesn't seem to be a problem. I've also just turned seventy years old. So I'm not expeting any miracles. But no harm in trying.

Hi, I went through your query. Lengout or colchicine should only be used for acute episodes of gout and that too if the pain is not relieved by regular analgesics. It should certainly not be taken long term. For chronic gout allopurinol is a popular and effective medicine. Also you should avoid...

Hello,

Your data is insufficient to diagnose any disease.

I have terrible s/c joint pain that can be felt on my Right collarbone (including above and below). I have had x-rays, a CT-Scan, and an MRI. The only thing that was concluded was that there is increased uptake showing in this area. Could this possibly be gout? How should I treat it?

Hi, I donated a kidney to my brother on Dec. 15th. 2010. I was discharged 4 days later back home & all was well until a week ago. Then my right foot big toe joints ballooned and became hot and very painful. My G.P diagnosed Gout. I have no previous history of gout or arthritus & no family history either. I had no suggestion of this complication during my tests and preparation for the surgery. I am 53 years old. Aside from 2 weeks of inactivity the on;y other factor was that someone had recommended I drink Cranberry Juice as, I was told, this helps avoid possible bladder infections, (following catherter insertion). The little info. I have found re. gout does mention particularly avoiding Cranberry & fructose - unfortunately! Should I be doing anything other than avoiding high Purine foods & keeping the foot elevated, should i be worried & will I now be prone to further attacks? Any advice welcomed. Many thanks. Andy Ferguson

I was dispensed the wrong medication by Boots. I had been taking 100mg atenolol daily instead of 100mg of allopurinol for gout. I ended up in hospital bradycardic and, apparently, very close to an M.I. I only have one remaining kidney with mild hydronephrosis.I only took 2 doses and the last one I took was last Wednesday evening. I keeping getting a very lethargic, dizzy and going quite pale, whenever I get up to do something. Is it still normal to feel unwell after 5 days without taking the drug. I realise the half-life of atenolol is only 6 hours, so I am rather worried as to why I am still feeling similarly to how I was last week.
