Giant cell arteritis

Questions and answers on "Giant cell arteritis"

I have most of the symptoms for Giant Cell Arteritis , Temporal Arteritis. At a follow up from cataract surgery with my Ophthalmologist he was very concerned about the previous mentioned conditioned. I had blood work that included SED rate & CRP. Those appear to be in range. Still very severe Pain right side head, face , neck, etc. My PCP's office hasn't even called (they are to busy) after 2 messages I left. It's Friday afternoon, should I call again and ask for further tests to be scheduled (and if so what tests?) or just go to emergency room? Any opinion would be appreciated. Thank you, Pam Mayer

Hi Pam!
Welcome to HCM!
Your ESR & CRP are within range while in Giant Cell Arteritis , Temporal Arteritis they are usually elevated. As it's localized on one side, it's probably a migraine. That occurs when nerves in the brain stem become overexcited (any cause from skipping meals to stress). And...

I had a CT scan of the brain Oct 4 2014, and it showed a possible meningioma or osteoma. I have been having excruciating headaches on the right temple for many months, I had a comp;eye loss of vision and terrible pain several years ago and cannot tolerate bright light. I take Tylenol #4 and a Duragesic patch w fentanyl. I had an MRI done several weeks ago and now nothing is shown - the interpretation is that whatever I had was "artifactual". I have splitting headache daily, I need Imitrez, have had migraines since teenage. My Neurologist insists there is nothing wrong with me and he makes me feel like I am malingering! HELP!

Hi I've got a lump on my right temple. I have minor headaches and a feeling of numbness when tired in the same area. I've had a blood test which showed normal live function, and no excess protein. My Dr felt this information rule out giant cell arteritis. The lump has been there for about 4 months, I'm 28, and athletic, I'm going to have an ultrasound in a few days. I also have a visual disturbance similar to a visual migraine, that does not go away and am concerned that the two may be linked. Can you please let me know what other conditions could lead to these symptoms.

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
This could be a soft tissue swelling.

I was diagnosed with Giant Cell Arteritis last November. I am on Prednisolone now down to 5 mg a day and Methotrexate 15mg once a week. I am suffering many side effects, including hair loss, hot sweats, rashes, muscular loss and general apathy. I am a 77 year old woman who has been very healthy all my life. I am also caring for my husband who has Alzheimers. I do not have a specialist since I live in the ACT and their lists are full. I am willing to go to Sydney for a consultation.

three weeks ago I had a bad headache, blurred vision and some numbness on l side of face. I went to the ER and they did a CT and bloodwork. I was told all was ok and they sent me home with ERY 333 in case there was an underlying infection of some sort. They did mention a small amount of fluid on L eardrum. I went ahead and followed up with an eye dr and dentist. The eye doctor did the exam and dialated my eyes. He was concerned about Giant cell arteritis and wanted the results of my bloodwork. I had to go back and have that particular blood test drawn. The number was a 10 and not 50 or more so he ruled that out. I then went to my dentist and the xrays showed a possible abcessed root. Second to last molar on the L side. Because it was such a big filling he went ahead and pulled it. I was then tols to continue my antibiotics and he prescribed more. I still have a on again off again headache, never any fever. Tooth area feels beter today is two weeks, although looks like it is still draining a bit. I was out and about today and my husband said that my was was all red. I looked in the mirror and it was all red and bloodshot looking. Then after about an hour it was normal again. I am starting to get a bit stressed wondering what is going on. I finished my last antibiotic tab today also.
